My Dream Amp...

My dream amp would have the overdrive of a Vox and the cleans of a Fender. Does ... this .. exist... in any combination of tubes + amp or anything? Right now, I'm on my wits end with my JCM900 -- terrible gain clarity, and dark muddy cleans.

Re: My Dream Amp...

Peavey Classic 50 on the cheap
Mesa Maverick if ya got $$$
I've had both and actually prefer the Peavey.

Re: My Dream Amp...

Well trying to get a Marshall 900 to sound like a VOX or a Fender is not going to work! I have a 900 50W combo, the Dual Reverb with EL34's and quite honestly I like the amp quite a bit...... for what I do it works. The gain is a little fizzy at times, but I use the clean channel more and I use a Marshall BB OD with it. Works for me.

You may have to look at Boutique to get both of those amps in one box. Or at least an amp that is EL84 powered, but that may lose the Fender vibe you want. Have you considered buying a Valvtronics?

Eh a few suggestions bro. Fender has loose Jangly cleans and great reverb. You need something like the following:

Koch Twintone II
Laney VC30 or LC30 if you want higher gain
Mesa Boogie 5:25

Yes! VOX Valvetronix is amazing! But I still haven't found the booming bluesy low end i'm looking for on the clean channel (I'm SURE it's there if I spend more time with specific VOX models) - atleast not in my brother's 15R combo, but maybe a VOX head instead, running through my Marshall 1960 cab would gimmie that boom n' punch bass I need.

Re: My Dream Amp...

The glassy Fender 6L6 sound and the chimey Vox EL-84 sound don't happen in the same amp, it's all in the tubes. I have a Dr. Z RXES and it has great cleans and a great drive, but with EL-84s, it leans towards the Vox side. It can get a nice clean up to about half volume, which is very loud. If you crank it, you get a nice pre-top boost Vox drive with a bit of a Marshall-esque crunch and Dumble smoothness. It's really hard to explain but it sounds amazing.

Sorry I kind of rambled, but you would be better off buying a Fender blackface RI and a Vox Custom Classic to get both in their pure state.

Re: My Dream Amp...

I'd suggest some of the new Vox tube heads. Not exactly what you asked for, but probably closer to a head you're really wanting to hear.
