My Duncan Custom Just Died.... HELP

Been swapping out a bunch of pickups in various guitars (This place tends to make me do this :) )

I have an old Custom (Mid 80's ? ) that I'm about to install. Quick check with a multimeter was not promising. Here are my readings.

Pickup is set for humbucking operation. White and Red wires are soldered together. Green and Bare wires are soldered together to form ground. Black wire stands alone as hot.

Probes on ground and hot = zero k ohms.

Disconnected red and white wires.
Probes on hot and red wire alone = zero k ohms.
Probes on hot and white wire alone = 7.04 k ohms.

Not up on my wiring, but would this be that one coil has a short, and when connected together for humbucking operation equals a dead pickup?

Any help is appreciated. I'm not afraid to take this apart if any of you think a broken wire could be fixed.

Re: My Duncan Custom Just Died.... HELP

The Hot(black) and white is the stud coil... the red and GREEN are the screw coil... if you measure red to green you should get a reading. If not, you may have a dead coil.
Also, attach the red & white together then measure black to green to see if you have both coils which should be about 14.2k

Re: My Duncan Custom Just Died.... HELP

I would think that one of the wires has come loose from the the coil. I think they call them pigtails, it's the wire coming out of the coil that is soldered on to the hookup wire. They do come off some times.

If you do not know what you are doing I would send it to Duncan or a pickup winder you trust.

It's not easy resoldering those pigtails. But if you do I would use a drop of crazy glue or something and wrap it in a piece of electric tape. Then pot it so it doesn't come loose again. If it's the wire that starts the coil it's much harder to get the wire on, it's short. If you screw it up the coil is gone. The other wire can be unraveled a bit so you have something to work with.

If it's the coil than it needs to be rewound.
