My Epiphone DOT need SD pickups for Stoner Rock!!!

Hi friends, I've a new guitar, an Epiphone DOT, really great but the stock pickups are really limited and don't make a great sound.
I play essentially stoner rock things like Kyuss, Black Sabbath, Fu Manchu, Nebula, Qotsa, Electric Wizard, I'm also a big fan of Smashing Pumpkins and love really heavy tone etc...My amp is a Laney GH100TI (Tony Iommi Signature), with Fuzz and effects (flanger/phaser/delay).

I would like to know what are the best SD (chrome covers) pickups for my extremely beautiful low priced guitar and my playing style?
I think a 59 on neck is a great thing for get the vintage tone, but make me some proposition!

Thanks a lot

Seem like you're asking for a 59/C8. Are you open to magnet swapping? The C8 may be the right thing for you.

Its sounds great in my engl stock, you should try a diff amp! Not dissing your amp, I wasn't to impressed when I played the Iommi, thought it would be more ballsy and low end sounding.

One of the dudes from QOTSA uses a 59/CC set up in a semi hollow. Might work for you too.

+1 to a C8/'59N. CC's can be a little too rounded in the high-end in a warm-toned guitar, which Dots often are. The Custom's a little bright & harsh. The C8 however...:14:

Depending on the amp...I'm going to say (and this is NOT a stock answer) 59's and maybe a touch of the tone knob.

Thanks for your answers
Okay so adjuged for 59 in neck!
What do you think about C5?
I don't know what is the C8? I don't find on the website

I'm also a big fan of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, I think he use this kind of guitar

The C8 is the C5 (or any other custom) that has an Alnico 8 magnet. You have to "do it at home", since it's not a stock model... I had a Custom 5 in my SG and converted it to a C8, that I like much better. Other users can explain better to you how to do the magnet swap.

Re: My Epiphone DOT need SD pickups for Stoner Rock!!!

So if I don't like the C5, I can mod it to C8... Great! I love DIY things!

What the difference between C5 and CC?

Re: My Epiphone DOT need SD pickups for Stoner Rock!!!

Screw Alnico 8's...

You need a Custom/'59 set

Re: My Epiphone DOT need SD pickups for Stoner Rock!!!

I would like to know that I really don't want a "modern" or metal sound (emo, death etc).
Really want the sound for stoner rock and sabbath inspired things

Re: My Epiphone DOT need SD pickups for Stoner Rock!!!

Okay and what the difference between
C5
C8
CC
DC

Thanks

C5 - bright, tight bass, scooped mids
C8 - darker sounding, thick, present mids and tight bass (not quite as tight as the C5 though)
CC - very dark sounding, LOTS of mids, loose bass
DC - less treble than a C5 but more than a C8, crunchy, flat mids and thunderous bass

Re: My Epiphone DOT need SD pickups for Stoner Rock!!!

I really ask myself between C8 and CC.
If I want a C8, C5 is the best to be moded?

You can turn a C5, CC, or Custom into a C8. Many of us have done that. You can get a CC and see how you like that. If it's too dark and too rounded on top, just put an A8 in it. You keep the mids but add a little treble and boost output.

I have a C8/'59N in an Epi Sheraton, and it's one of my best sounding guitars. BTW, I play blues and classic rock (Cream, Zeppelin, Savoy Brown, Ten Years After, early Fleetwood Mac, Sabbath, etc).

Re: My Epiphone DOT need SD pickups for Stoner Rock!!!

Okay, so I must find if I prefer C5 or CC, I think on stoner rock guitar, you have a lot of mids and bass response (low tuning is also set). I'll listen this pickups on the website for hear what is the best.

Excuse for my bad english ;)

59 & pearly gates, that's my opinion. Very versatile.
