My First Rid Jam!!

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
Okay, I went thru all of Rid's backing tracks, and this one just dared me to put something on top of it. From the weird, F# Locrian line in the begining, I knew I had to come up with something to accompany this track.

First, Rid, let me say this: The quality of your backing tracks is astounding. Thank you for giving us such high quality material to jam with!! For me, it's an oportunity to play around melodically in a framework that I would never use myself. I really like the "Dm Blues" thing, as well, but I found it a little to limiting for me, tonally. If I were a vocalist, I would've written a great Joe Lynn Turner vocal line for it!! :D

Not much to tell you about the clip; just listen to it and you will get the idea. I played my Jem into my Korg PXR-4, set to the "2001" preset, with no modifications to it; just gain and compression. There are a lot of guitars here: I doubled most of the parts, and harmonised a good number of them, including the really fast sweeps at one point. There's a lot of tremolo work on this one ... just seemed to call for it; a fair amount of two handed work, some of which is just melodic, not really shredding. Overall, I do very little shredding on this track!!

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it! I had a blast making it, and will be trying to do a couple more while I have the HDR here at home (I'm supposed to be tracking guitar synth parts for my album, but I won't tell the band I'm doing this if you don't! lol ;) )

You can find the clip at http://twilightsongs2.tripod.com

THIS BETTER BE GOOD! :D

i'v wanted to hear you play for a long time just to see what teh fuss is about

it's downloading now so i'll tell you what i think in a few.

Re: My First Rid Jam!!

Yeah, I'd be pissed if I were in u'r band & found out that u spent the time to do that . :D

Very nice stuff. Reminisant of Vai's P&W, if I'm remebering correctly.

Love the little warble (woorble?) note on the first lick with the bar.

When I was a kid (I was a shredder B.I.T.D.) I really liked this band, Shotgun Messiah. The gtr player was a tasty shredder who warbled the bar a lot.

Anywho, Nice stuff!

Re: My First Rid Jam!!

Thanx!

Good call on the Vai, b/c that was who I was ripping off in some spots, tho not intentionally. It has some Vai-esque moments, tho ...

I know Shotgun Messiah well (what 80's rocker wouldn't?!). The guitar player from that band was actually from another band, that I can't recall of the top of my head. He played bright yellow S series Ibanez's, like Frank Gambale ...

Very Tasty :D You kept it fresh all the way thru. No dull or repetative
moments to be found !! Your playing reminds me a lot like Vito Bratta's.
And I mean that as a complanment :) He was one of the best to come
outta N.Y. in the late 80's ( I think he was from Brooklyn to?)

Re: My First Rid Jam!!

Yeah, I think his name is Harry Cody or sometin like that. I remember videos where he played a Desert yellow Vai model w/ the vine inlays and a Video for, I think, "Dont Care About Nothin" where he played a Red Jackson V.

Bad A$$ 80's mutha.

WOW, kmc! Thanx alot! You made my night! :D
Bratta is one of my favourites of all time, I'm a huge White Lion fan. I met Bratta at L'Amour waaay back in the 80's. I was, like 15. My friend and I were like 'It's an honour to meet you, Mr Bratta'. And he was like 'Call me Vito. Mr Bratta's my father." :) Really nice guy, and one heck of a guitarist.

Re: My First Rid Jam!!

i ahte to say this, but it sounded like noise.

but then again, i dont have speakers on my comp. im using headphones and one of the speakers isn't even working :D

so i cant really make a worthy opinion :(

Re: My First Rid Jam!!

Whoa, I'm feelin' the Vai in there! That was some kickass solo work. I gotta learn how to do stuff like that, it was very vocal. :cool3: :cool3: :cool3: :cool3: :cool3: :cool3: :cool3:

Re: My First Rid Jam!!

Big thing to point out, as Bui said, very vocal.

I attempt to emulate singing with the guitar... I can't get it though haha.

Spot on TO.

Re: My First Rid Jam!!

ok listening to it nowq with different headphones that work.

it was badass! very melodic playing, Vai like definitely. you just need to hit a couple more harmonics and pull it up a IV :headbang:

Thanks well I just dig them up on the net, take what I like and download them.
Anyways that was a great take on it man, loved it.

Re: My First Rid Jam!!

i liked it! especially the tapped section onwards :D

very vai like double tracked solos+ trem work

Re: My First Rid Jam!!

Thanks for the positive comments, guys! When I listen back to it, it definitely has a jam-like sound to me. I did the whole thing in about an hour. There are some melodies I really like, and some I would probably re-track if I were so inclined (but I'm not).

I'm definitely a "melody first" player, even though I like to shred where I can.

I hope Nuntius checks it out!

LOL! Just finished my post and there you are! Glad you liked it, buddy!

Re: My First Rid Jam!!

Yeah. loved it. I like melodic stuff so I'm a sucker for this one. If you can do that in an hour - then you're a better man than I.

Particularly like the bit around 1 min 05.

Re: My First Rid Jam!!

Nice Work!!

I found it easy to listen to, which is sometimes difficult with an instrumental track. I agree with some of the above ref's to Vai and Bratta, but I'll throw in something else. It had a sort of movie soundtrack quality in a Steve Stevens, F-14 launching off the end of a carrier, kind of way. :unitedsta :unitedsta

Where's the CD?

Thanx, Lee. I like that bit around 1.00 - 1.15 as well. The wide interval thing, going into the octave bit ... very Vai inspired, and it just seemed to fit into the pocket so nicely. All I did was reinforce the backing chords, tho. I would like to hear someone take that backing track and push the tonality ... some more chromatic bits and diminished stuff; that would be very interesting to hear, as well.
