The C5/59 hybrid actually is quite different from either the '59 or the C5. Each of them "fills in the gaps" of the other to produce a very different sounding pup (hybrid). I didn't much like the stock '59, but with an A8 it was much better. I didn't like the C5 either, but here again, with an A8 it was pretty darn good. Put one coil of each together and with an A5 and you have a real winning combination.

I found the hybrid combined the compression of the C5 with the non-descript boominess of the 59. Again, 2 pups that didn't do "it" for me. I didn't find they filled each others shortcomings, I found "hybridizing" (?) them combined their shortcomings, but again that's just me.

For me it was like taking 2 things that don't taste good and eating them together, hoping they would taste good together.

That's very interesting that you got those results. Sorry you didn't like it. It seems that I ended up with the best qualities of each donor and the shortcomings were gone. It could be a very picky beast, however, like the JB...it just really hits it off with my guitar though.

I think AniML is the only one I've heard who didn't like the hybrid. For most users (myself included) the pickup seems to sit in the middle ground of a proper hot PAF.

I'd have to say though, with the LP that I've got it mounted in any magnet but a polished A5 killed its tone.

One of the guitars i used it in was an LP. Also tried it in an alder hardtail strat copy (body mounted)

It was just too compressed, but that's what I don't like about the custom so maybe that character came through to my ears.

It wasn't like I hated it, but it wasn't what I was after

The only guitar I've tried it in thus far has been my Wilshire Pro (SG type guitar) mounted in a Triple Shot. It really sounds amazing in this guitar. I don't notice any objectionable compression. It sounds open and has a very wide EQ...very full, rich, sparkly, luscious tone with great presence.

But pups react differently in different guitars and everyone hears thing differently. We all have our own likes and dislikes (a good thing). If you didn't have the same experience as I am having with this pup, that's just the way it is.

would that be a 59 neck, or bridge model?
and if you combine these 2, could you use the left-over coils for the neck position?

Bridge for both donors, and yes, one of them is in the neck. I have the 59 coils outward (closest to bridge at bridge and closest to board at neck).
