My brand new Les Paul goldtop looks more gange GREEN than gold! Is this normal or did I get a messed up guitar?

Hard to say...the actual old ones from '56 or so DO look a little greenish/gold but I think they aged to that color. Lew

A poorly cared for vintage goldtop can end up looking like it's covered in mold. I've seen pictures. Not pretty.

Gold top guitars dont really use gold paint. they have bronze mixed in. When the bronze oxidizes it turns green. check out the rs site for more info.

Re: My goldtop looks wierd

I saw reissue gold top hanging in a pawn shop...being the refinsher that I am, I ask to see this odd colored LP. Where the arm/elbow rubs...totally green, behind the neck...totally green. It was really fugly and most surely caused by sweat...belonged to a known druggie who used to pawn it a lot...never came back the last time I guess. Having a lacquer finish means some durability sacrifice...I doubt you'll find the 'gangreen' effect on a poly top coated axe. :22:
