Last week I had a chance to go to a couple of guitar workshops led by Lincoln Brewster. In one of them he talked about the mods he had made on his Fender Custom Shop gold strat.
Lincoln may not have come up with these on his own. He admits that Jeff Beck is his guitar hero, and while Lincoln was playing with Steve Perry he had Beck's old guitar tech working for him. So these ideas may have come from him. At any rate, these mods have given my guitar new life - so I'm just throwing them out here for you.
The first is the volume treble bleed mod. I had done this on one of my other guitars, and I had a couple of extra kits laying around ready to go in the next guitar I had open. It's really just a small resister and capacitor wired across two lugs on the volume pot. link
The second is moving the rear tone knob to the bridge pickup and the center knob to the middle pickup. There is schematic for a version of this here. Instead of either version though, I dedicated the rear pot to the bridge tone, and the middle pot I wired for both the neck and the middle pickups.
Like I said, I'm just putting them out there. They are both easy mods, and for me, they made a big difference.
