My love for metal did me in this time!!!!

I just had the Invader in the bridge and Jazz in the neck installed in my guitar and i must say i am disappointed. The Jazz sounds good but the Invader although definately hot really lacks in tone. In fact the weird thing about it is that the lower 3 strings are heard greatly but the higher 3 strings are barely noticable! I was so into finding a super high output heavy metal bridge pickup (passive) that i sacrificed great tone and now i`m paying for it cause i can`t live with the Invader! I will replace it with a Duncan Distortion to go with the Jazz in the neck. I don`t hate the Invader it`s just not for me. Its tough picking out pickups going by word of mouth and internet reviews and such instead of actually hearing them in person but i can`t find any guitars equipped with these pickups in local music stores so i have to take a chance,i did and i lost that time but live and learn!!! At least the Jazz is cool so i`m 1 for 2! I will get the DD tomorrow then the guitar goes back in the shop. My love for metal did me in this time but i`ll be back!!!!! :fing25:

Re: My love for metal did me in this time!!!!

Having said all that.....i`m actually a little nervous about getting a DD because i`ve never heard one in person. I played a JB before and thought that one was great but i prefer a little hotter than that! Is that what a DD basically is,a hotter JB? What about the tone of a DD compared to a JB? I need some help now because after the Invader situation i`m nervous about this!!! I`m not wealthy and can`t keep wasting money like this, besides,my wife is gonna kill me!!! *LOL* PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

Re: My love for metal did me in this time!!!!

If the top strings are inaudible with your Invader, there is something wrong with the pickup, the wiring, the guitar, something.

Also, what exactly are you looking for tonewise?

Re: My love for metal did me in this time!!!!

You can hear the high strings but they are definately lower in output compared to the low strings. Decent for rhythm but lacking for leads. There`s nothing wrong with my guitar it sounded good with the stock pickups but i wanted more output and power.I`m looking for a JB tone but with more power. I thought i just wanted extreme output and power but realized i care alot about tone as well. Even the harmonics don`t jump out like a JB does! The Invader isn`t bad its just not what i thought it was gonna sound like so it disappointed me. Bottom line is i`m looking for power and definition not just power! My mistake though and i`ve learned from it!!!

Re: My love for metal did me in this time!!!!

Before you throw in the towel on this one, you might try adjusting the pickup height and the individual screw-pole heights. That can make a world of difference in your tone.

Re: My love for metal did me in this time!!!!

WOW nice call.....i just did that and it sounds 100 times better! Now the treble side of the pickup is slightly higher and it brought out those strings in output to even the sound out! Hey...i might keep this thing! The luthier or whatever those guitar techs are called....i think just had the pickup too high, just lowering the pickup made a big difference. Will lowering a pickup define the sound more? I really don`t know much technically about the guitar,i mean i know how to play but i always take my guitars to a specialist to do the work on it. I think he might have just had the pickup too high. I will play with this thing before i change it. Who knows? I might just keep it!

Re: My love for metal did me in this time!!!!

Hey, I could really see myself in your first posts... I'm anxious ordering a pickup I've never tried out. Aint no fun :yell:

Glad for you if it turned out OK in the end though!!
But I've gotta ask: What height from the strings is your Invader now? And why lower the bass side if that was heard OK? I would have thought that you should raise the treble side to get them closer to the strings and therefore make them stand out more?

Re: My love for metal did me in this time!!!!

My experience with the Invader was you could get it too close to the strings. The magnets would pull hard enough to actually reduce acoustic sustain. That and by lowering the bass side I always felt it helped my invader sound tighter and more articulate.

Re: My love for metal did me in this time!!!!

Somewhere, there was a website where the guy had diagrams of the magnetic fields that surrounded certain pickups. It was interesting to note that on some pickup/polepiece configurations, the magnetic field had a higher density at some dinstance out from the pickup, rather than uniformly dense as you moved away from the center.

So, you could have a situation where moving the pickup too close to the strings results in them vibrating in a weaker part of the magnetic field. If I can find that website again, I'll post the link.

Re: My love for metal did me in this time!!!!

The Invader does lack alot of definition. The DD will give you alot more deffinition.

Re: My love for metal did me in this time!!!!

Thanks guys!!!!! I think the big problem with it was it was too close (high) to the strings and since i lowered the pickup it is much better. For some reason the treble side of the pickup seems much weaker and needs to be higher then the bass side to even the sound out. I will mess with it today and decide if i will change it for a Distortion!

Re: My love for metal did me in this time!!!!

keep in mind that the distortion sounds just different than the invader. The DD has more highs but imo lacks a bit of bass and bass is where the invader has it's qualities

Re: My love for metal did me in this time!!!!

Ahaa.. Another "pickup height" problem! That's why I posted a thread about it recently.

The DD is not a "hot JB" .. the JB is plenty hot enough. THe DD is a different animal.
Great one.

Re: My love for metal did me in this time!!!!

if your guitar has a curved radius (like a strat), it'll be worth your while to gently stagger the polepeices on top of the pickup to balance the volume levels as well.. if you have a staggered polepeice pup handy, you can copy it's staggering with the allen screws..

used to like my lil '59... i love it now :)

Re: My love for metal did me in this time!!!!

the JB and DD do NOT lack bass.. they arent as FAT as the invader (it damages your hearing while using it anyway)

and they both do marvels at high gain. but glad you found the sweet spot for the pup =)

Welcome Back Edge! ... was wondering when you'd get on the new board

Re: My love for metal did me in this time!!!!

Update......I`m seriously thinking about getting a Screamin Demon for the bridge. I`d rather have tone and clarity instead of high output and not so great tone. Plus if the Demon has great sound my amp will help the lack of power and distortion that pickup might have so i`m thinking about getting the Demon for the bridge to go with my Jazz!

Re: My love for metal did me in this time!!!!

there is a 21 day return policy so none of you guys have to worry about trying out a pickup. good luck guys

if you want a hotter JB go with the DD since that is the closest production pup OR if you really want the JB's tone but more of it get the larger alnico 5 bar magnet that dimarzio uses(same size as the DD's ceramic one) in their PAF pro's and put it in the JB
sounds phenomenal man! :)
