My MIM Telecaster (Zhangliqun pickups on the way)

So, finally, some pictures of my MIM Telecaster. She's pretty, but not a looker. She's a real girl next door: pretty, confident, and sweet.

I've been PMing with Zhangliqun (Dave) for the last few days, and we've decided on which of his pickups to use for the upgrade, and settled on a Paul Bunyan bridge and what we've taken to calling the "Babe the Blue Ox" neck pickup (essentially a Phat Cat style pickup; a p90 in humbucker size). So, once those get here and get installed, I'll post some updated pictures of her.

Cosmetically, I've also decided on a Vintage Pearl pickguard, but I'm still debating whether to change the knobs. I quite like the standard ones.

I think your going to be happy with that PB. So did Dave manage to get that B90 all under a chrome cover? I assume so , he's a very resourceful guy. I will say one of my favorite pups is the neck he made for my tele. BTW you're pics seem backwards :joke:

Nice one. ;)

Yeah, he's going to get it all under a Phat Cat style Nickel cover. Should look amazing in the end. Great guy to deal with, really understands what you want from a pickup - you have no idea how much I'm looking forward to the pickups! :D

Re: My MIM Telecaster (Zhangliqun pickups on the way)

Finally gotten myself some more funding (no kidding... Crafter thread in the making, even), so I can get the last little parts in before having the pickups installed.

One question, though - can someone hook me up with a wiring diagram?

PhatCat style pickup in the neck, Single in the bridge, 3-way switch, 1 vol, 1 tone, and a 0.022uF Orange Drop cap. On a reversed control-plate. And all left-handed, if that makes any difference! :p

I'd really appreciate it! :)

Re: My MIM Telecaster (Zhangliqun pickups on the way)

Very nice guitar. Looks a little weird as it's all backwards though. :alcoholic::D

Re: My MIM Telecaster (Zhangliqun pickups on the way)

strange looking bridge with the vintage saddles on a modern base..... And is teh bridge intonated? the saddles all go in a line on an angle on your axe????? But it looks great

Re: My MIM Telecaster (Zhangliqun pickups on the way)

I like that bridge!! It's cool. Retains the vintage sound, and to an extent look, while providing perfect intonation on tap!! Needs a white pearl or Red Moto pickguard.

Beatifull simplicity at its best. You are right about the girl next door theory. I always loved fenders with black finishes/white guard/ maple fretboard.

Re: My MIM Telecaster (Zhangliqun pickups on the way)

Nvm, definitely needs a BLACK pickguard!! That with the black finish and maple board would totally be Joe Strummer approved!!! :headbang::D

Re: My MIM Telecaster (Zhangliqun pickups on the way)

Thanks for the compliments, guys.

Already settled on all of the visual design choices, though, and it's not red, black or white... :)

Yeah, it's a good combination for now. I'm thinking of eventually getting her refinished, though. Some cream-based/vintage-white mix color to work even better with the Vintage Pearl/Cream/Black pickguard I'm putting on now.

Anyone want to help me out with the wiring diagram, still?

The bridge was this way when I got it (second-hand, though) - I quite like the combination of looks as well. :) It stays in tune like a beauty, for some odd reason, so I'm not really fussed about getting the saddles out of the line.

i wouldn't go for the pearloid, i think a black white outlined pickguard on a black tele with a maple neck is the sexiest a tele can look. Can you tell im GASing for a '72 tele?

Re: My MIM Telecaster (Zhangliqun pickups on the way)

I'll do you up a wiring diagram and post it when I get home from band practise.

Thanks, mate. :)

I'm going to see how I like the Vintage Pearl/Cream/Black pickguard that I've already got - if it doesn't work out, then I'll go looking for a B/W/B pickguard or a Black Paisley ( :D ).

Finding parts hasn't been easy, though. Anyone happen to have favorite sites they order from (in Europe, or at least with decent International Shipping)?

Re: My MIM Telecaster (Zhangliqun pickups on the way)

Finally got everything sorted about two weeks ago - been playing 2 hours every day since! :biglaugh:

Thanks to the Zhang pups, she sounds AMAZING, and I'm not saying that lightly. Clear highs, but not harsh. Beautiful mellow lows on the neck, added sparkle in the middle position. Oh, and don't get me started on how great the bridge sounds now, especially with the tone rolled down around halfway. This is what a Tele is supposed to sound like. :)

And now, the pics:

I like those knobs. You have me regretting using black dome knobs on my tele.
