My music is up

Re: My music is up

There's nothing wrong with that mate, in fact it's pretty good.

If I was critical of anything it is:

The tone is too thin and too distorted. I think you'd come across much better with a cleaner 'blues' tone rather than a hollow metal tone.

Also, I thought your 1 minute blues jam just seemed to lack a little direction. By that I mean I couldn't whistle it afterwards. Try this. Establish a riff or theme and keep coming back to it. Make sure that the listener could whistle it after listening to it.

Other than that - very impressive.

Keep posting, it doesn't matter what.

Just try and get a bit better recording technique if you can as it is letting you down badly. It's making your good stuff sound ordinary whereas that needn't happen.

Re: My music is up

Lee,

Thanks for your help... "Make sure that the listener could whistle it after listening to it." is going to be left permanent in my head everytime I play :)

Re: My music is up

Well... when I listen to If I could fly and Enter sandman, I'd say you have no reason to be shy my friend. Very good execution :headbang:

As Lee said, your clip badly suffers from your recording gear. These two solos would sound awesome with a proper recording technique. I know this often means buying stuff, something not eveybody can do unfortunately.

What do you use to record? Maybe we can help you find economical solutions to help you improve that. Simply changing my amp improved my tone so much I have the impression a play better.

As for the blues, no worries. Did you hear me improvise over blues track in here? Hell no... I'm still to coward to do that myself. People underestimate blues. It's another ball game. Not just a matter of A-D-E. I think it's harder the get the blues feel than any other musical type. It has to grow on you I guess. Or maybe you have to have it under your skin.

Re: My music is up

Cheers Sly, it's a step in confidence, thanks to the encouragement from the other thread.

I've got a Yamaha 312 HSS, plugged in to a Metal Zone with Full bass, Full mid freq., a lot of mids and highs... just everything up :P

Amp is similar... without the Metal Zone it cuts a lot better but it sounds kinda weak... thats what you get from the Rage :P

If I Could Fly was done with the Cool Rails
Enter Sandman was done with stock

And I position a standard computer microphone in between the speaker which replays the backing track and the amplifier, where I balance it...

I know what you mean about the blues - I guess you really gotta have the blues!

Re: My music is up

About your 1 minute blues jam and 1 minute classical gas pieces, they both seemed like there was more to it, and you just literally cut them off at the 1 minute point...

Re: My music is up

Haha, you'd think so - but it's not really the case... but that's what sound recorder does, only gets one minute aye...

Re: My music is up

There is software around the place if you look for it.

I plug straight from my amp into the line in socket.

Re: My music is up

lol so i'm not the only guy who listens to helloween (occaisonally ;) here

its not too bad, when you get a better recording technique you should play in the forum jams, next time we have a decent one

Re: My music is up

Sounds confusing Lee... I have an input, cd input and headphones jack on the amp.

Amp into powerpoint, guitar into input...

I've got one of those converters that make a big lead tip into a small lead tip - but I'm not sure where I could use that.

Re: My music is up

Haha yeah nuntius these guys are giving me some tips but I don't think I have the equip... we'll see.

Only listened to a bit of Helloween recently... I love the Detroit Rock City cover :P

Re: My music is up

My practice amp has a headphone socket that is also an 'emulated line out' -so I plug a lead into that which has the 3.5 mini-jack on the other end which goes into the soundcard 'line in' socket.

I then use Adobe Audition to record the music.

Re: My music is up

Any sound card will do but if your amp only has an ordinary headphone socket it might be badly mismatched. In that case you need a small mixer to help sort things out. Even a little battery operated job will do.

Whatever you do - don't give up.

Re: My music is up

Yeah, I suspected you were recording with a computer mic...

Well, are your parents rich? :) Seriously, I'd start to earn some cash to get a good recording device, your playing deserves it.

I'm not a fan of digital devices, but if your on a budget, I'd go for a Behringer V-Amp 2. Millions of very decent sounds for US $124 or the small Korg Ampworks for US $139 or so. For even less, you have the X V-Amp by Behringer (US$ 65) which is the best modelling little box for less than $100.

Keep on playing!

Re: My music is up

Wicked! Great advice, sounds cheap and effective...

But when you mean buying modelling amps (Sly) and mixers (Lee)... it's just a plug and play thing, right?

I'm planning on getting a Traynor YCV40T... does the amp have anything to do with recording?

Thanks for all the help guys, 'preciate it loads :newangel:

Re: My music is up

A mixer or suitable preamp is the cheapest way to get started.

A little mixer from Ebay could be as little as A$10.

It's well worth getting something sorted - you'll be a great asset to our little on-line band. Just something cheap to get you started while you save up for something decent.

All I need to get started was the lead from the amp to the soundcard - and that was it! About one dollar would sort it.

Re: My music is up

Lee's right.. problem is, from what I know of the Peavey Rage, there's not even a line out in there... I may be wrong though.

As far as the Traynor is concerned, there probably is at least an effects loop, and you can then use the "Send" to the sound card but it will be very harsh... that's why I had a Behringer Direct box with 4X12 Cab simulation ($29,99) between the card and the Peavey Bandit... yet my tech 21 is a lot better for recording, and a heck of a lot smaller than the Peavey Bandit.

I'd tell you one thing from experience... if you want it to sound great live (even if only in your bedroom) it probably won't be too good to record. And the opposite is true. If it sounds great for recording, it normally sounds like crap live.

This is two different world anyway. Very few can afford a Marshall cab and a SM57 and no wife/kids/neighbours to yell at them when the roof goes down :).

Re: My music is up

Ohh ok... Thanks Lee n' Sly!

The final question is... does the modelling amplifier (cheap $10 one, perhaps V-Amp, etc.) plug straight into the comp or does it plug into the amp then into the comp?
