My man Seppo @ Frankinstein Guitar Works comes up with another beauty for me !!!!

Frankinstein Fretless 4 string acoustic bass

Burled Black Walnut top w/Rosewood bridge
Spanish Cedar body
Mahogany neck (Jazz bass specs) w/corian nut
Black Walnut fretboard (look at the color/figuring :32: )
Belcat UK-2000 piezo & EQ
Grover tuners
Fender 9120 tape wounds
Rear tummy cut, heel contour & forearm contour

Weighs MAYBE 5lbs. & plays like a friggin' stick of BUTTAH !!!!!!!

Silky smooth & warm........

Got it yesterday & played it most of the day & night familiarizing myself with the fretless feel & listening instead of looking.

I suck....but I'm getting there :D

BTW...the pics don't do it justice; it's GORGEOUS in person :D

When I get the time & it nice out, I'll take some more shots.

Re: My New Guitar !

Thats a big jump my man!!! Going fretless this early is like jumping right into the deep end but if you can make it work it's a great sound! I was looking at basses just yesterday and grabbed a fretless...I used to have a Fretless J bass but it had been a long time and my intonation was off a tad!

Best of luck getting the fretless things nailed down, if done right it can be a beautiful sound but if done wrong it can drive me nuts!

Beautiful bass BTW...I really dig it!

Here ya go...

Re: My New Guitar !

Yeah, I was concerned about that, but you know....it'll make me a better player, I think.

It's making me LISTEN !!!

I grabbed one of those small metronomes & played most of the day yesterday, unplugged at night......I wasn't too far off by the end of the night; worked out Jaco's America The Beautiful to where it was recognizable :D

BTW....Is Portrait of Tracy one of the most beautiful pieces you've ever heard or what????!!!!

Re: My New Guitar !

Jaco was one of a kind and wrote some beautiful stuff for sure! I'll tell ya...Tony Levin and Pino also do some amazing fretless work as well as fretted. I love to listen to a good fretless player but one thing I hate is when the bass line is full of Glisando's (is Glisando's even a word?!) all over the place and nothing else! Sometimes it's good to have to know it's fretless just by the tone not because the guy is sliding all over the place!

Re: My New Guitar !

I hear ya'....

I grabbed a cd lately, Attention Deficit The Idiot King....

Alex Skolnick-guitar
Tim Alexander (from Primus)-drums
Michael Manring-bass

Kind of like jazz-fusion-metal..........very cool disc if someone is looking for something "different" :bigthumb:

But yeah, Manring just tears it up !!!!

Re: My New Guitar !

Claypool is a badass in many MANY ways, but some of their tunes are just downright annoying.....

But check this one: Love the little solo riff @ 3:06

Tim Alexander is a monstrous drummer.....maybe a cross between Bonzo & Peart !!!!

I'll have to burn ya' a copy of Attention Deficit !

See...Primus never bothered me...even their most "annoying" stuff...

Tim is a killer drummer but Im not sure he culd do much else besides this kind of stuff...Brian (the guy that replaced Tim for a while) on the other hand is very versitile. Also, FWIW...Ler, as strange as he is just blows me away sometimes!

here's another just for good measure!

Re: My New Guitar !

Cool bass bud, you're right.. THAT pic does NOT do it justice! Tough call though... fretless, wish I could play a fretted one to a decent level. All the best.

Re: My New Guitar !

so Terry, you're a bass player now?

if so, I'm jealous, 'cause I never learned to play bass and always wanted to.
I'd be more in the Jamerson / McCartney vein though. :D

actually I've had parts for a Warmoth P bass for a while but never finished it ... one day ....

Re: My New Guitar !

Well, in truth, I wouldn't go so far as calling myself a "bass player"............

I started a little bit ago when my brother dragged me to a weekly jam/get together with some guys he knows & everyone would show up with guitars, but no bass....so I said screw it & grabbed some bass gear.

I used to have a P bass & know some stuff...enough to get by....but I'd like to get better.

It's fun for sure & with the fretless, it's a definite challenge, but it sure sounds cool ! :D

Re: My New Guitar !

nice man...looks awesome...the bass can be pretty fun with the right music!?

NEW STUFF ROCKS!!! :headbang::headbang::headbang:

Re: My New Guitar !

That's pretty cool Terry! In the immortal words of Hoss.....

New stuff Rocks!!!!!

Re: My New Guitar !

Thanks fellas :beerchug:

I'm telling ya', if you want a great axe at a decent price, Seppo will hook you UP !!!

Some of the guitars in the gallery on his site are a little out there, but he'll whatever you want.

Build time was MAYBE a month....took about 10 days to clear Customs during shipping.

Re: My New Guitar !

That looks excellent Terry! Just remember that the main purpose of a fretless bass is to play the "booo booo" slidy bit in the middle of Feel Like Makin' Love :D

Re: My New Guitar !

Funny......I got with him a while back wanting to have him build me a Rosewood Tele like George Harrison's. He just got a nice slab he thought would be great too.

Something came up & I didn't go ahead with it.

So he built that one :D

Yeah, it's nice, but mine would've had a 1 piece Rosewood neck too :bigok:
