My official custom JSX and speaker cab build thread

Ok so here goes. I bought this JSX with a broken head enclosure for cheap, stripped the cab of useable parts and threw the particle board **** case in the dumpster. The amp works perfectly and sounds great after a biasing and tube-swapping.

i didnt like any of the preamp tubes the previous owner had installed. a mix of chinese and russian tubes.

EDIT:

i'm currently using this tube combo and loving it:

V1 ECC803S
V2 ECC832 12DW7 (12AX7/12AU7 hybrid), also trying a 12AT7 here when i buy one.
V3 ECC803S
V4 ECC83S (trying an 803S here when i order another one)

When I see a bunch of different pre tubes, I usually think......a guy that listened with his ears and not his eyes...installed what sounded good.
Are those the stock Peavey tranny set.?
They kinda look like Heyboer.
Good luck with the cab... this will be Fun/Interesting to keep an eye on.
best

I'm a big fan of the new Mullards these days. They're relatively expensive, but we're talking about three to four bucks more. Not a big stretch. Also like the Chinese 12AX7AC5 HG+ from Ruby, but they're not as smooth as the Mullard RI. And everyone says Sovtek 12AX7LPS in the PI, but with my amp a lower gain PI sounded a lot better. I don't think that's the case for yours.

The issue is all the tubes were packed seperately, and i don't know where he had them all. I've moved them around a couple of times with little to no change. Right now i have a ruby in V1, chinese 12AX7A IN V2, chinese 12AX7B in V3 and a sovtek in V4.

Less tubes.

More build.

It might not make as much difference as you think. I swapped around all kinds of stuff in my M-1000 and even in my Bugera (cough) 333XL (JSX copy) ranging from new production everything to old blackplate RCAs, some Indian thing, and a couple Matsushltas, and nothing really made much, if any difference. By that, I mean it was so small it might have just been my ears playing tricks. New amps seem to be designed around current production tubes.

Dropping the gain? 12DW7 works really well in V2. ECC803s works well in PI. Maybe try the Mullard in V1. They play a little softer than a lot of tubes, but they have some balls. I like them more than the LPS in the PI spot, but like the 803s more in the PI. Regardless, I prefer long-plate tubes in the PI. I would also like to try that 802 long plate version of the 12AU7. Peaveys tend to like JJ tubes, FWIW. My last JSX I used a TungSol in V1, Penta C9 in V2, V3 and either the Mullard RI or 803s in the PI. I mostly used the Crunch channel with a boost. Had a MUCH thicker tone than the Ultra Channel.

Same size case out of better wood 27x11x10
Brown ostrich tolex
Hardwood versions of the big chrome plates
Cream knobs, probably chicken heads
Tan weave grille cloth

That sounds beautiful

Re: My official custom JSX and speaker cab build thread

I'd say ditch the "S", keep the tan weave grill. Classy look :bigthumb:

Re: My official custom JSX and speaker cab build thread

V2 controls the crunch and ultra so it will have the most impact. Use 83S' in V3 and V4. Otherwise, lower gain tubes in V1 and V2 should put you where you want to be gain wise.

Re: My official custom JSX and speaker cab build thread

Dang, you have some serious skills.
Looking forward to seeing how this turns out!

Re: My official custom JSX and speaker cab build thread

Looking forward to the finished piece.
One thought tho. How about switching the red light out for an orange one? Could look good with the brown and tan.

Re: My official custom JSX and speaker cab build thread

I'm switching the light out for probably an orange one and switching the chrome knobs for cream chicken heads.

Re: My official custom JSX and speaker cab build thread

Looking very good so far. It makes me happy you saved the JSX head. Such a good head to let go to waste. Can't wait to see the final product.
