My review of the Mod Tone Clean Boost

I'm not much of a product reviewer, so please forgive me if my review is lame. There's not alot of info on the Mod Tone Clean Boost pedal here on the SDUGF so I thought I'd share.

The Mod Tone Clean Boost comes packed tightly in a small box. There is a card insert with very breif instructions and photos of other Mod Tone products. I think Mod Tone is one of those "appear to be boutique" pedal manufacturers - its kinda pricey and its says made in China on the box... Boo. :28:

The pedal is very straighforward so minimal instruction is needed. Its your standard, small MXR size pedal with a Tone and Level knobs and a blue LED. The level knob can boost or cut your signal by 25db. The tone knob rolls off bass and treble frequencies. Pedal quality and feel is on par with other pedal manufactuers today.

Firstly, I know alot of you guys would say, "who need a boost pedal when you've got a volume knob?!?"...

I mostly play my guitar on full volume. I mostly wanted the boost pedal to boost my solos when using the clean channel. I have the eq settings on my clean channel set just the way I like 'em. With both knobs at 12 o'clock the Mod Tone provides no boost and no change to the sound level or tone. Setting the Level knob to 1:00 gave the perfect boost level I was looking for. Past 1:00 the level continued to get louder and push the clean channel on my Marshall into some nice clipping. The level knob can also be used to quiet your signal into a very delicate tone that is touch sensitive. Turning the Tone knob to the left rolls off the treble and allows bass frequencies to pass. Turning the knob to the right rolls off bass frequencies and produces a brighter tone. This is somewhat misleading as advertisments say these would be boosted frquencies, but I think they just cut. This would be useful if your looking for a heavy or brighter tone for your solos. I set the tone at 11:00 to roll off some of the treble when the boost is engaged to save my audience's ears.

With the gain channels using amp distortion the boost in volume was not as noticable as much as the jump in distortion was. Maybe I have my gain set too high. Using the boost pedal increased the volume level but also boosted the level of distortion, not really what I would consider usable for a lead tone. Not of major concern to me since I really wanted a clean transparent boost for use with my clean channel.

Overall, I'm very pleased with this pedal. It is very easy to use, and works as anticpated. This pedal has a db cut feature and tone adjustment that some other boost pedals do not have and I like having that option 'just in case'... This one will stay on my pdeal baord for sure.

Re: My review of the Mod Tone Clean Boost

The Mod-Tone stuff is pretty decent. We sell it in the shop. I think they just took old Boss and Ibanez designs and copied them. I used one of thier Analog Delays on my board for awhile and am thinking about using one with my Fender Deluxe. For what they cost and as well as the couple I have personally used, they stand up to some regular abuse.
