My SH-6 wont fit! can anyone help?

I tried to fit an SH-6 (7 string) to my RG7420 and due to the L shaped legs and the pole screw sticking too far through the bottom pick up the SH-6 stands too high in the solid body and the strings rest on the pickup (the pick up actually pushes the strings upward).
Can i be able to cut the tips of the screws off beneath the pick (only about a 1/16 of an inch) without altering the sound ?(i can't raise the pole screws as they will touch the strings) - then i can modify the legs of the pickup and lower the hieght just enough to allow a little space between the strings and the top face of the pickup.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

The best way would be to route the pickup hole deeper. I heard that cutting the pole piece screws so that they are flat to the baseplate makes the pickups sound tighter. I could be wrong so lets see what other people have to say.

The only snag with that is there isn't much wood between the bottom of the pickup route and the top of the underside trem spring cavity - i think its about 9mm.

Just carefully bend the legs flat (straight out from the base plate), cut to length, enough to drill a new mounting screw hole. Trim corners as needed, drill a screw hole, and paint it black to hide it better. Push the pup against the wood, just enough to leave a very light impression - drill out some holes for the pole pieces. Tone stays intact, and you should be able to adjust the pup height if you use springs and/or foam with no major alterations to your guitar.

Genius - i've just finished it and it sounds great, a lot heavier tham my six string which has a JB in it - thanks a lot for the sound advice.
