My Shure SM57 for your SM58?

I acquired a secondhand SM57 a while back thinking I'd finally get into recording, but my band needs me to do backup vocals instead. I'd like to do a straight trade for an SM58. My mic is in great condition. Only comes with the mic, no box or anything, just the way I received it.

All that you really require is the spherical pop shield.

Alternatively, the old nylon stocking stretched over a bent wire coathanger between the capsule and the singer's mouth would do.

Haha

I'll have to try using my SM57 for vocals. Didn't think to do that for whatever reason.

yep. the 57 and the 58 are the same mic, just with different windscreens. straight from Shure's mouth.

In short, they're the same mic internally, but they do sound different due to their different tops.

But either can easily and quickly be made to sound like the other. With this (http://www.amazon.com/Shure-A2WS-Locking-Microphone-Windscreen/dp/B000Z08U7U) you can effectively make a 57 sound like a 58. And by unscrewing the wind screen ("ball") from a 58, you can effectively make it sound like a 57, though the mic's diaphragm is not well protected when you do this.

57's are the better option IMO. I'd rather add an accessory to make it sound like a 58 than remove the protective screen from a 58 to make it sound like a 57.

This is incredibly misleading because they do sound quite different from one another, and Shure has made no such statement.

You didn't click on the links in ItsaBass's post, did ya? That's Shure's website saying exactly what you're saying they're not saying.

Shure said:
The SM57 and SM58 microphones are based on the same cartridge design. The main difference is in the grille design. The SM58 was designed for vocal application and it uses a ball grille that acts as an effective pop filter. The SM57 was designed as an instrument microphone where a smaller grille size is preferred. In this application, pop and wind are not usually a concern.

Same cartridge ≠ same mic.

I picked up that A2WS at Guitar Center today, along with a boom stand, so I'm now a backup vocal machine ready to rock. Thanks for the recommendation Itsabass.

So glad I found this thread. I have a sm58, but would rather have a sm57. Good thing I didn't buy one, seeing how their practically identical. I can just take off the filter and have the best of both worlds!
