My Wah Broke - Time to Replace!

Well, sadly, my trusty Origional Dunlop Wah is no longer with us today. Now - it's time to replace that SOB!

I'm looking for a db boost enabled pedal that gives you that fat scoop that we all desire but is also subtle enough to give me some those quick vibrant attacks (maybe a "Q Knob"?).

Anyway, just shout out your favorite Wah's that fits my description and I will be happy! Thanks a bundle in advance.

Fulltone Clyde Deluxe. Best wah I've ever owned and includes a boost too! Lew

I've had my eye on that particular Vox. Could you provide any additional information on it rather than the stuff I read on MF? Thanks.

Condsidered it. Kind of put it off for the following:

1) Time... I have a show on Friday and I need it quick! Living in Washington and having to mail it to him over in Florida - that could prove to be very time consuming, not to mention the actual labor hours.

2) Quality... I've always been "fine" with this wah. It's always done the job and done it pretty well, but I've always seeked for a TRUE wah. Something that gives me that fat scoop capability and a boost so I can accentuate those higher notes.

But, John, if you think that you can help modify my pedal to my needs, then that would be exceptional. Time is not that important, because at worst I'll just drop by my local GC and "rent" a copy.

Give me a PM or a reply, friend, and we'll see what our options are. Thanks again.

Hello buddy....First we'd need to get it working again...Mods come after we get it working...The main parts for the wahs aren't cheap though...I do have the transistors and all needed parts except for the inductor and the pot(The 2 most expensive parts) Might be better to invest your money into a much better wah also....The Clyde didn't turn me on and is pretty pricey...If I was going to buy another wah today,it'd be one of Teese's wahs...This guy is the wah guru! Hands down, this guy knows more than anyone and carrys more types of wahs than anyone else suited to people's styles....Save your money buddy.I don't need your money!

What a beautiful and beautifully equipped wah, but OUCH - those prices!! :smack:

As you know, you get what you pay for and if you want the real deal, that's the real deal...An original Vox 846 or Clyde Wah would set you back twice Teese's price but if that's the tone you desire, you can't put a price on tone...If you just need the occassional wah tone than look into the Vox 847 or the recent Cry Baby for around $100...If you crave vintage tone like Hendrix,Trower,SRV,Clapton etc..then the Teese is the one to get...I've messes with the Teese stuff and it is the stuff..

Very cool and I totally agree with the statement, "you can't put a price on tone...". However, still being a student - I have no money!! LOL. :laugh2: Get a job, right!? Anyway, do you know if he sells for any bargain, or does he sell strictly by the prices on the site? ...Mom, I think I've found my 5 Year Plan!!

Sure. The Fulltone Clyde Deluxe is the best Wah I've ever owned. Very Hendrixy and vocal like tone. Great muted trumpet type tones too. I tend to use a wah to shape the tone when I solo to make my guitar tone even more vocal like. I like to use the wah to squeeze out notes like Hendrix did on Rainy Day...those talking guitar tones. The Fulltone has a wider sweep than any of my old Vox, Crybaby or Dunlap Wahs. It's the first newer Wah that I've owned that has the open breathy quality of the original Clyde style Vox Wah I had around '66 or '67 and which has always been the benchmark for me for the ultimate in Wah tone. The boost function on the Fulltone Clyde is adjustable and I find it very useful for getting just a touch more output out of my Tele to make it sound a little more like a humbucker. (Like the tone Jimmy Page got on the first Led Zep album where his Tele sounds almost like a Les Paul.) I have zero complaints about the Fulkltone Clyde Deluxe. If mine got stolen I'd buy another one just like it. My Vox, Crybaby and Dunlap wahs all sit on the shelf unused since I got the Fulltone. Actually, I gave the Dunlap away! Lew

Great post Lew...I Know you're an advocate of the Fulltone product and I use his inductor and his wah pots in my reissue Vox 847s when I Mod them...I've not tryed his wahs, but sounds like it's right in line with Geoffrey's wahs..Quite frankly and sadly enough, the Reissue Clyde MC Coy wah and any of the reissues, just don't have the sweep nor the tone of the original wahs we love from Jimi,Clapton,Page,SRV and many others of that era...The reissue Clyde is around $150 and so makes it reasonable for most guys on a budget and has true bypass and 9 volt adapter access, but if a guy wants "that tone" he pretty much has to spring for the Teese or the fulltone in my opinion, but we're talking guys that really need a great wah tone and use a wah alot.. My own Vox 847 wah is modded pretty heavily and it does have a good tone and more range, but the Teese Picture Wah really nails that whole wah tone of the original Clydes...

Hope you had a great camping trip buddy...I Know it was well deserved!

Thanks John! I had a blast...except for the first day when I went out on a 4 wheel drive only trail, got a flat tire 50 miles from Moab, Utah, tried to change the tire only to find that when I had new tires put on the last time, the guy didn't check how much he'd torqued the lug nuts on and 5 out of 6 of the lug bolts BROKE OFF when I tried to remove the tire! Had to hitch 5o miles into Moab, have the truck towed back to town, have the rear wheel repaired with new bolts, buy a new tire, and spend the night in a Motel 6 instead of at my campsite in Canyonlands. But that was only one day. The rest of the time we had an absolute blast. Hiked about 30 miles or more, found some incredible, totally unmolested 1000 year old rock art covering about 1/8 of a mile of cliff face, found a 1000 year old ruin near our campsite, etc. I love the 4 corners area...where Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico all come together. I like the country, the people, the culture: everything. I'll probably retire in that area.

Back to Wah's! I've never tried the Teese Wahs...I'd like to. Curly has been bragging them up and I trust Curly (and you!) as much or more than just about anyone who posts here.

I don't know that I'll ever get around to buying one tho as the Fulltone Clyde does everything I've ever wanted a wah to do. When I hook up my Tele to it and the Fulltone 69 fuzzface clone, I get the Hendrix tones I've been searching for since I started getting serious about the guitar 35 years ago!

Mike Fuller can be a little short to deal with...but his wah and fuzzface clone are superb. Hated his Chorus/Flanger tho...sold it almost instantly!

Re: My Wah Broke - Time to Replace!

i have to be honest i'm not a huge wah user but being a metal head of sorts, i do own a Dunlop DB01 Dimebag Darrell Wah and this thing has tons of useful stuff...the "Q" knob which is great and it has a huge extended sweep from real deep to real high along with a small what they call "kick in" boost button to add a bit more edge to it. overall this thing is killer IMO i can get tons of sounds from it by tweeking the "Q" and use of the boost...plus it's camo which looks killer hehehe. Now if i could only find more use for it. here is a link so you can read a bit more on it...

So are you one of those strong arm contest winners? Breaking lugnuts off and stuff Lew? Remind me never to arm wrestle with you buddy! Glad you had a great time after that setback though..That's cool what you got to see and do..

Ok Yeah,wahs....
I'm like you Lew....I'd like to hear the Fulltone wah and I've read alot of reviews from people about Mike's wahs and most of his products are great I Know also...

Coming from you Lew and another person that I value in knowledge and opinions,I Must say that I appreciate the statement you made...Curly is another one(Like yourself)that I admire and trust on these things..And yes,he digs his Teese wah I Know..I'm pretty happy with my modded 847 but one of these days I'd like to step up to another level...We do so much classic rock and our music and styles requires it...Thanks again for the nice gesture coming from you...You absolutely know the feelings are mutual buddy.... :yourock:

Re: My Wah Broke - Time to Replace!

Thanks John! BTW, I just got an Antiquity II Strat pickup set in. I'm going to put a set in my white Strat that had the Antiquity Tex Hots in it. It's been sitting empty since I ran out of Texas Hots and had to sell a guy the set right out of my own guitar! Anyways, I'm putting those a5 Antiquity II's in this weekend. The bridge pickup is hot...over 9.5K, just like the Antiquity Custom Bridge in the Texas Hot set. They seem to be similar to the a2 Texas Hots but use a5 poles instead. I'll letcha know how they sound in a few days.

I'm really looking forward to hearing them as I really like the brighter, glassier tone of the SD SSL-1's...as well as the a5 Fralin Vintage Hots I have in a differant Strat.

Guess I'll do an Ultimate Strat Tone thread soon...to go with the Ultimate Tele Tone thread.

I should be able to wrap the Ultimate Tele Tone thread up soon, as I now have the Antiquity Tele set to try in the James Burton Tele I've been swapping pickups in. It's going to be hard for any pickup to beat the Jerry Donahue tho...I've been looking for THAT Tele tone for over 30 years!

Oh very cool lew....Would love to read your reviews on those pickups..I'm not partial to the A2 or the A5 poles in my strats...It pretty much boils down to me getting the pickups into a particular axe and seeing what works..If things are too bright,I like the A2s and if I need more chime I'll go the A5 route...The A2 Texas Hots just seem so perfect in my rather bright alder American Deluxe strat though...
