My Warmoth neck shipped.. project almost complete!

Well, my latest Warmoth neck finally shipped out.. it took a bit longer than expected (I ordered it January 3rd and was told 4-6 weeks.. It's due for delivery on March 16th :blackeye: ), but hopefully it will be well worth it.

The neck is for the first Warmoth I put together (and have since disassembled); a Black Limba double cut Les Paul body with a flame Walnut top, white binding on the top and bottom, and a clear finish on top with a translucent midnight blue back. I had a neck for it before, but found the Wizard profile to be a bit too thin for my liking after a while. The new neck I ordered is a Wenge/Ebony neck with a Flame Walnut peghead veneer (something the old neck was lacking), white binding (also something the old neck was lacking), an SRV back profile, and Abalone dot inlays.

I had ordered a custom truss rod cover from Nichols inlay (http://www.nicholsinlay.com/) a while back in anticipation of the neck being completed.. it's a VERY nice looking abalone rose inlayed on a piece of striped ebony with a glossy finish.

Finally, I ordered some striped Ebony control knobs, a toggle switch cap, and a wood control cavity cover from THG Knobs (http://www.thgknobs.com/). Those should be arriving any day now..

Basically, I'm decking out the guitar in what I'm hoping will be some pretty killer accessories.. Eventually, I might order some wood tuning knobs or wood pickup rings, but I'm in no hurry on those.

I'll keep you guys updated with pictures once the project is completed, in case anyone's interested. :dance:

Sweet! I definitely want to see some pics, that sounds like a helluvanaxe!

You'll really like that SRV profile, it's my favorite of all the back shapes I've tried. I've been thinking of ordering a wenge/ebony neck for my next project, I have a Goncalo neck on my Strat which is awesome, but I've wanted to try a wenge neck for the longest time.

Roger at THG is a great guy.. I got some rosewood humbucker rings from him before that are outstanding.

My upcoming project will be a black limba body/neck with an ebony fingerboard. I'll be using all black hardware, so maybe some Ebony control knobs? Could be very cool .

My other Warmoth has the SRV profile and I think it's amazing... just the right thickness.

Wenge has a very nice feel to it.. it's not the smoothest wood, but it still feels great. I think you'd like it.

Another thumbs up for Wenge ... My only beef with it is that it's hard to work with. I've been trying to make pickup rings out of some of my private stash ... We'll see how it turns out but it's not my favorite wood to work with

Fatty, have you tried stainless steel frets on any of your Warmoth necks? If so, what do you think of them?

I have a Wenge Strat neck with an Ebony board and Stainless Steel frets. This neck "howells" tone. Very musical sounding neck, I was suprised. I just wanted the stiffist, most stable wood I could get and really wasn't expecting this cool tone. I tried it on a Walnut body and it seemed kind of bright. On a basswood body is sounded awesome and on an alder body it sounded good too. I'm partial to Mahogany tones because I play in a modern rock type of cover band so heavy/warm is the tone de'jour for me. I bet if you put a Brazilian rosewood board on the Wenge it would be magic. I'll try that sometime.

Stainless? Love them. It's all I use. Put them in a Warmoth LP and been gigging constantly with it for nearly two years, they still look new. Got to love that!

If so, it won't work for Warmoth necks...they need a 3-hole pattern, even though you could get-away with the ol' 1-hole hanging style

That's true. I bought a truss rod cover like the one you have up there and needed to flatten out the bottom with a belt sander and drill two holes in each of the bottom corners. You can see mine done like that in the Warmoth Customer Gallery in the LP section under G. Stewart.

Greg, do you have any advice on the best way to level frets on a compound radius neck? I've finished putting together my Warmoth Strat, and it looks like it needs a fret level. A couple forum members have helped me out with this, but I thought I'd get your opinion on this since you deal with compound radius necks all day. I am experienced with fretwork, but I've never worked on a compound radius neck before.

One other quick question, have you ever compared wenge to goncalo? I'm wondering how similar they are in terms of feel and tone. Thanks.

No, that's not the exact one. That particular one is for a Taylor, I believe? It was the same pattern that I got, though. (I didn't have any pics of mine handy.. that pic is from the Nichols website)

I traced my cover from the plastic ones that Warmoth sends with the LP style necks. I will be doing the one-hole hanger, but the bottom of the cover will be flush with the nut, so it shouldn't have any problem.

I had that exact combo on a Strat neck I ordered from you guys a while back.. it was awesome. It almost seemed to have a slicker feel than the ebony. Sounded great, too. (Or maybe that was the P-90s? :13: )

I couldn't imagine having a job at Warmoth.. I get GAS bad enough working at a guitar shop. :smack:

I've heard different opinions on 'em.. some say they're great, others say too bright. I'll probably stick with the nickel frets until I can actually play a stainless steel fretted neck firsthand. I can't imagine them making THAT big of a tone difference.

I haven't, personally. (I'm not sure if this question was directed to me or Gregg.. I'd imagine he'd probably know).

Don't use a radiused sanding block. Use a flat file and level in the same direction as the strings.

I don't know of anybody who has used both in a comparison. I haven't played on a Goncalo neck, but we have customers call back to buy more when they've tried their first one. Great reviews come back all the time on both Wenge and Goncalo. If I ever get one back for a return, I'll take her home and string her up for a road test.

Yeah, you know what it's like then. I've got this Madrone Burl top Tele sitting at my desk right now. I've never seen Madrone Burl but it looks awesome and I can feel my credit card getting warmer. The other day I almost bought a Tobacco Burst Black Korina LP carved top that's going into the Showcase. It's like you have to come to terms with the fact that you just can't buy everything! Thank God I gig so I can help support (in a small way) the sickness! Way fun though I have to admit!

Thanks Gregg...you should definitely try a goncalo neck, it's the fastest, smoothest neck I've ever played on.
