N.G.D. PRS SE Bernie Marsden

Re: N.G.D. PRS SE Bernie Marsden

I hope that you have a nicer amplifier to play through than the character in the YouTube video.

Are we supposed to play Guess The Replacement Pickups or summat? ;)

Re: N.G.D. PRS SE Bernie Marsden

Sorry, didn't mean to be coy but I did this in a hurry. I did a lot of internet research for pickups for this guitar and I looked at a lot of SD's particularly the Custom Series. I also looked at some DMZ's because I've never used them before. In the end I went for a set of Bare Knuckle Abraxas because I like the idea of an overwound PAF. Also, I was able to make a phone call and had a long chat with a great guy (Ben) at BK before making my decision.

I've always had a bit of a downer on PRS because I didn't like any of the double cut models - they just didn't feel good to me. The Bernie is incredible. The fit and finish is perfect unlike the last Gibson I bought that retailed at twice the price. Apart from pickups I can't find any fault with this guitar. They are a great platform for your pickups of choice whatever they might be.

I know that a lot of folks consider BK's to be overpriced. In the UK they cost about the same if not less than some of the higher end SD's. For example my set is £100 cheaper than the SD Bonamassa set and about £90 cheaper than an Antiquity set.

BKP Abraxas, eh? Should deliver the sounds nicely.

On PRS SE guitars, I find the pots and machineheads leave something to be desired. Whack in some professional pickups (in my case, Lindy Fralin overwound P90s) and you're good to go.

BKP will seem expensive after any overseas importer/distributor has added their mark up. After my experience last month with a pair of Pig '90s, I may have to get me some, too.

Enjoy.

Re: N.G.D. PRS SE Bernie Marsden

Which finish did you get?

Over in the UK they had some limited runs of them with 57/08s and 53/10s.

I've watched one of that guys review videos before...I forget what..an amp, IIRC....he drove me nuts.

Re: N.G.D. PRS SE Bernie Marsden

The clip in the opening post features a Line6 modeller, almost certainly recorded through the camera's onboard condenser mic. Double crap.

Re: N.G.D. PRS SE Bernie Marsden

Bernie I'd the owner of "The Beast" that is often played by Joe Bonamassa. I saw a video in which Bernie took the surround from the pickup switch off. The Beast is the coolest Dirty Lemon finish, and underneath the switch cover the finish is bright Reddish Brown. It's amazing how much the finish fades in 56 years!

Got myself one of these. Lovely guitar. One of the nicest necks I've ever played - it is a duplicate of the neck on Bernie's 59 LP. Great fretboard. Nice, smooth controls. Tunes up perfectly. The 245 pickups are pretty good but I want to ice the cake so I've ordered replacements.

LOL the top comment on that YouTube video is "which language are you speaking, mate?"

HNGD sir. I loved that video you put up, I'm always surprised to hear the local accent on the internet.

Re: N.G.D. PRS SE Bernie Marsden

Played my first gig with this guitar after installing the Abraxas set. Just wonderful. If you prefer your LP type guitar to have a FAT sound these pups do it in spades. I was concerned that the bridge might be a little too smooth but it has loads of bite. Nice kick in the low end as well. Great mids too. In fact they seem to have a lot of everything.

Is there an SD similar in specs to this ?
