N(old)GD coming.

Went to Guitar Center today to look at Soul Food and OCD pedals. As I was walking in, I looked up on the guitar racks and saw something I haven't seen there before. I honestly haven't seen many of them at all.

I immediately asked someone to take it down. I took it for a test spin on a Blues Deluxe Reissue. Played awesome, sounded killer, and I wasn't going to get this one get away from me like the Alpine White Les Paul did.

With a deposit put down, it should be growling through my Deluxe Reissue by the end of this coming week.

Here's a teaser. And if you saw my brief thread in the pickup section, please don't spoil.

Any guesses? And no I didn't buy any pedals. Just picks.

If you haven't seen it yet, it's new to you.

Re: N(old)GD coming.

Doesn't Guitar Center charge extra for checking? I heard it was an extra dollar per linear inch of check line.

Re: N(old)GD coming.

It looks as though my NGD date may be pushed back a week. Hopefully only a week. Damn truck issues!

Anyway, here's what it is. 1974 Cherry SG2. Not a lot of love for SG 2's, it seems, but the thing plays and sounds so sweet. Plus, I've always kind of been attracted to the odd ball/ugly duckling's of guitars. The Wilkinson mini humbuckers will go, and probably get replaced with SD Antiquity ll's.

Went and played it for a bit today, and did notice a couple things with it. One, and not a big deal, but the nut is shifted a little to the low E. I can always pop it off, and reglue that. The other is one of the posts for the bridge, high E side, is the slightest bit canted towards the neck. While there, I loosened all the strings, removed the bridge and screwed down the post more, and it seemed to help a little bit.

One thing I was told today, was that their "vintage" guitars, you only have 72 hours to return it. Not 30 days like anything else.

That guitar looks so broken in and inviting, I just want to wrap it around me like a favorite blanket!

Congrats!

I agree, that is very nice! Nothing like the look and feel of an old guitar, and if they sound as good as they look, then you just found a new friend for a while.
Congrats and thanks for sharing this with us.

That is certainly odd. The switches are the first thing to go on those, so check them.

Re: N(old)GD coming.

Well, since you brought it up first...

I'd replace those knobs with original Gibson silver top hats

And Seynourized is never a bad choice for under those chrome covers....

If you're going for original, that guitar would've shipped with witch hat knobs. Pretty sure Gibson stopped using top hats on SGs in '67 or '68.
