NAD and FX loop issues

Picked up this previously loved bad boy last friday. Wonderful little noise machine, even without the attenuator on it still sounds good at bedroom volume.

FX loop is giving me headaches though. Plugged in Boss NS2 and MXR 10 band EQ and all hell breaks loose. When the NS2 is on the amp squeals like a stuck pig. When I hit the strings the LEDs on the EQ start to flicker. According to MXR, that happens when the signal is too hot and the pedal starts to clip.

Have emailed ENGL but I'm not getting any response. Any tips?

Does the loop have any sort of level control? If so, turn it down. If not, then try running those pedals through the front.

No level control. And I don't want to run the NS2 just in front, I want to connect it using the four cable method.

Re: NAD and FX loop issues

It sounds like the loop is running a line level signal that is too hot for the pedals. Maybe someone else can offer a suggestion?

That would be my first guess too. Really weird, never had any issues with those pedals in any other amp. And the MXR runs on 18 volts so I would think headroom wouldn't be an issue.

Re: NAD and FX loop issues

So after fiddling arounda bit more, I got the amp to play nicely with the EQ. No more clipping, at least for now. The NS2 seems to be the culprit. Still causes the amp to squeal if I run it in the loop. Super weird, I've never had any issues with that pedal in any of my other amps. Still, I'm guessing buying something like a TC Sentry is cheaper than hauling the amp over to a tech for a check-up.

I also found out where in the signal chain that built-in reverb is placed, since the gate just chopped those trails clean off. Might just have to live without the gate for now, not planning on gigging with that amp anyway.

Re: NAD and FX loop issues

If clipping is the problem, I've had great luck with Morley's Effects Loop Corrector: That can lower the signal for the pedal and raise it back up afterwards, and is passive, so no power is needed. Whether you'd want to do that for a pedal, though...

Hey, that's really cool. Sadly seems to be discontinued :( Thanks for the tip anyway.
