NAD: Fender Frontman 212

Jomo's Nimions
So what’s the big deal about a solid state Fender combo? This one was customized and came from one of the best people I’ve ever known. I recently got reconnected with my dad’s best friend from when I was a kid. After an evening of catching up and playing some loud blues, he left this amp with me. I swapped him my Squier VM J bass for it, and we’re both pretty happy.

The grill cloth is an old t-shirt he recovered it with, and there’s a Skynard drink coaster on the top right.

Nobody ever has much good to say about Fender’s solid state offerings, but this thing sounds pretty good. It gets along with my OD pedals really well, has a good sounding onboard reverb, and seems plenty loud enough to gig with. Quite surprisingly, the drive channel cleans up with the guitar’s volume knob really well, too.

And really, even if it sounded awful, that grille cloth makes it a keeper.

I have a lot to say about them. I just do not remember the exact model it was, but I played bass for a guy who used a Fender solid state... I think it was a 2x12... for some recordings and gigging back in the early 2000s. It did sound really good. I especially remember being overly impressed by some of the cleans.

I am a tube amp guy when it comes to guitars, but over the years, I have given solid state guitar amps another chance. They are better than I ever gave them credit for. My main heads are still loaded with those glass tubes though... it will probably remain that way for a while.
