NAD: Yammy THR10 x2

This is a continuation of my George's Music "closing-it's-doors" score.

The bottom one is new-in-the-box that I scored for a couple bills. The top one was an open box return, missing the PS and won't power up. Not even with batteries. I snagged it for $30. (Yup, I said "thirty".) I got it home and opened her up, and all it was is that someone "whacked" the power jack and broke two of its' three contacts. Since the jack disconnects the battery pack, that accounted for the batteries not working. It's a $4 part. Already found a source and it's on order.

Anyway, the good one sounds amazing. I can't believe what they can achieve with a pair of 3" speakers. It's true stereo. The cleans are killer. The reverb is rich and the chorus is lush. One of the best chorus's I've heard. And it's cool that you can plug an MP3 player into the aux jack and it plays in stereo.

This is a sweet little amp.

There will be another "NAD" thread coming, but I want to play with it some before posting. It was a good day at George's.

Re: NAD: Yammy THR10 x2

Welcome to the THR family!

These are really cool amps. The Cleans really sold me on mine (I have the "black" THR10C and absolutely love it...have tried the high gain "green" THR10X as well–super cool amps.)

Enjoy the amp!

Re: NAD: Yammy THR10 x2

The Cleans really sold me on mine . . .

Yeah . . . I'm not crazy about the "dirty" channels yet, but I haven't given it a chance. It still amazes me that Yamaha can do, with a pair of 3-inchers, what Vox can't do with an 8". I want to try this into some external speakers. The $30 one gives me some wiggle room to experiment. ;)

Re: NAD: Yammy THR10 x2

The yamahas are basically boom boxes with full range speakers and the amps are full models including cab and mic simulation, so, it's kinda the same as listening to a recorded guitar track through a stereo speaker. Just putting a guitar amp through a small speaker sounds terrible. You can't really compare them to cheap practice amps.

Re: NAD: Yammy THR10 x2

You can't really compare them to cheap practice amps.

Well, Yamaha advertises the THR10s as "a new concept from Yamaha aimed specifically at guitarists who are serious about their off-stage sound, and don't always have access to an elaborate studio or stage setup. Whether you're warming up backstage for the next big gig, brainstorming with the band at the hotel, or just jamming around a campfire, the THR is the perfect amp for everywhere you play that isn't on-stage." So I would definitely compare them to other practice amps, especially at a small 10 watts.

Not trying to be argumentative at all. I use this as a practice amp–would like to use it for gigs and such which is why I'm looking at the THR100HD for more power.

Yeah, that's basically marketing speak saying that the THR is the ultimate practice amp. I meant you can't compare it to a cheap little practice amp with 6" speakers or something, it doesn't work the same and it sounds much better. I had an X version and loved it for playing around the house, may have to look into another one.

As a bonus, since it is more of a full range system whatever you put into the aux input actually sounds decent unlike putting a iPod/MP3 player through a guitar amp.

Gotcha! It's perfect for practice to me–just wish one could find them larger. I'm all for the full range system personally--great for practicing!

I ran my little Sansa Clip through it and it was sweet. And the Yammy even comes with the 1/8" aux patch cable. I just ordered the rechargeable batteries so I can play with it truly portable.

The THR100 is cool, but expensive. Have you thought about just running the line-out to something like an Art SLA-1, or maybe a Tech 21 PowerEngine? There's lots of options that will let you retain the little Yammy sound and presets. I'm looking into this myself. I like those Art Amps.

I haven't thought of that approach–have definitely looked down some options for it.

I found this mod quite interesting. The THR100HD is very cool...and pretty expensive (Head plus Cab)

Re: NAD: Yammy THR10 x2

You can find the 100s used for $500 - $600, not that expensive compared to most 100W amps.

I've only found 3 used...all sold everytime I reached out. I've never seen one in a guitar store either.

Not currently in a position for one but am on the lookout.

Re: NAD: Yammy THR10 x2

An Art SLA-1 is only $229. But it would make your rig more complex.

As I read that again, it occurs to me that you probably meant guitar amps. Not rack mount power amps. :blackeye:

I own a THR5A for my eletroacoustic. Awesome rig for a home acoustic player.

To the OP, congrats on the score!

Re: NAD: Yammy THR10 x2

The THR10s are great for practice and would probably sound good through a power amp and cabs, but not quite versatile enough to use live for me. I at least need a clean and dirty channel and a loop is nice.

Re: NAD: Yammy THR10 x2

I am surprised that the THR series doesn't have a DI out. There's folks in a couple other forums who are installing an effects loop, but it's a PITA. It requires removing a couple SMD devices. Someone else installed external speaker out jacks. That was much easier.

Re: NAD: Yammy THR10 x2

At that point, it would just make more sense to save up for the 100 IMHO. Love the 10 for what it is, the "ultimate" portable practice amp, it's not a gig amp.

Just my opinion, but in my experience, but it's the kind of experiment that pretty much always ends in disappointment.

Re: NAD: Yammy THR10 x2

Got the little power jack installed today. She works like a charm. I can't believe that was all that was wrong with it.

Re: NAD: Yammy THR10 x2

My Microcube has a 5 1/2 " speaker and sounds just fine.
