Naga Viper VS. Beano Boost VS. Colour Boost

Re: Naga Viper VS. Beano Boost VS. Colour Boost

If you are leaning towards the Beano Boost to get that claptonlike sound the BBE Bohemian Boost is a direct lift of the Rangemaster circuit. The only difference is they put in a bias control The bias allows you to dial in the exact tone you seek, seeing the transistors varied from unit to unit in the Rangemasters. Clapton's rangemaster might not have sounded like Page's or Mays due to looser manufacturing standards in the 60's. The bias control allows you to correct that.

Re: Naga Viper VS. Beano Boost VS. Colour Boost

Though not a dead-nuts replica, the Naga Viper sounds VERY close to the Beano in most respects at a more reasonable cost. My Beano has a 3 position boost which gives it some versatility, but the treble boost setting sounds best to my ears. Sometimes I prefer one or the other in front of a fuzz, there is no clear winner. They both add colourations along with the boosting.

I have a lot of boost pedals. What are you trying to achieve?

Re: Naga Viper VS. Beano Boost VS. Colour Boost

The plastic case is a big strike against the BBE for me. I need something more rugged. I am tough on switches and some cases. I have broke a couple BOSS pedals in my day.

What am I trying to achieve....?..... Really just trying to get a nice treble booster..have not owned one in 25 or 30 years...not really looking to cop May or Clapton or Lifeson, or Priest. Just trying to find something tweakable to my rig, and of high quality vintage /authentic tone and tough construction.

The Naga Viper is the Dallas Arbiter Range Master Circuit with more controls.

The trick is knowing when to use one. A Range Master is properly used when the amp is cranked. If you aren't going to trainwreck your amp first, get an EP Booster or a ZVEX Super hard-on.

^ Pretty much what I was going to suggest. Treble boost is a particular beast.
I know she's expensive, but I think a SHO is really what you are looking for. My second recommendaion is the Bogner Harlow. The Neve transformer adds a distinct colouration that is very smooth and vintagelike, but harmonically rich.

Re: Naga Viper VS. Beano Boost VS. Colour Boost

I do crank my amp. Its only 15w (OR15) but I am always pushing the power section hard and the speakers are getting a workout too and the house is rattling. I am not trying to use one on a clean/ish amp. I get my cleans rolling off my guitar volumes.

I'm not looking for just another boost (I have those), Not any particular person's treble booster tone, but I am not wanting to go whole germanium gain madness with a fuzz or tone bender type.

Maybe I was not clear, but this wasn't supposed to be a "Should I get a treble booster?"" thread..it's "what are the pro's and con's of these models?" thread :)

Re: Naga Viper VS. Beano Boost VS. Colour Boost

Naga Viper
Pros:
Price
More versatile than a Rangemaster clone (it is not the same circuit, but sounds very similar)

Cons:
Very little actual boost beyond unity gain
Not the same circuit as the Rangemaster

Beano Boost
Pros:
Snob appeal
Resale value
Dead nuts Rangemaster circuit with additional boost options
Lot of characterful boost on tap
Easy operation

Cons:
Gets noisy very fast
Mid and low boosts do not sound very good compared to other boosts I have that do the same thing
Treble boost sounds best, but will really thin out your tone

For a general purpose, fat, or character boost, there are other pedals I prefer. In fact, I probably know the perfect one, but I don't think it's available any longer and you don't want to know about it anyway.

Re: Naga Viper VS. Beano Boost VS. Colour Boost

Thanks Ben. Thats the kind of info I am looking for :bigthumb:

The Dunlop EPpre takes care of a smoother side of things character boost, and the Belle Epoch is in traiils mode so it's preaamp is always coloring my tone (for the better).
