Nashville Tele cap & pickup recomendations

My Guitar Weeps

New member
04' Nashville tele which has the 3 pickups (Middle is a strat) 5-way switch.
Now I know this guitar can be a tone monster....neck is maple....I was wondering if anyone else had changed out there pickups....I've spent so much time on my lp and learning / listening to all the hb's out there, now I'm ready to take on the tele. I was pleased to find after inspecting the control panel that it came stock w/ cts audio taper 250k pots. Any ideas on changing the chicklet .022 cap? Hovland maybe from rs?

As far as music goes, we cover Crowes ABros, LYNSKYN, to the Foo Fighters.

SD's? Botique? I'm not going to spend 3 bills, but I do want to juice her up a bit.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated guys

youre not gonna spend three bills on one pup? why the hell not? or you meant on all three? you must be crazy...

or i have had too much coffee this morning

if it was me i would ditch the tele neck pup and put a pearly gates or sm-1 vintage mini humbucker in the neck. for the middle id go for a ssl1 for classic strat tones and id put a jd tele pup in the bridge for a good tele tone with extra push in the mids and a little less twang

I'd at least upgrade the cap to an orange drop. I haven't tried the Hovlands, so I can't comment if they're worth the extra $, but orange drops are noticeably better than the stock cap.

I like jeremy's suggestions ... depending on how it's routed, you might also consider a strat APS in the neck, which is a good match for the JD, and that's what Jerry Donahue has used.

As far as the cap is concerned should I stick w/ the .022?

Thanks for the replies guys. I've been looking at a Custom Shop Texas Special for the neck and a Alnico Pro II for the strat middle and Jerry D for the bridge.....any thoughts?

Try .022, and if it's too bright, then use .047

if you are talking about the Fender CS TS, I prefer the SD Antiquity Texas Hot for that tone, or the Surfer or SSL-1 for a brighter tone

you have to check with a good tech when using Texas Hots and mixing with other pickups, because they are wound "vintage correct"

sorry, I'm not sure if you meant Texas Special tele neck ... if so, I've heard they're good, but haven't used them myself

i find the texas specials a little harsh, especially compared to the aps

Re: Nashville Tele cap & pickup recomendations

I have a SM-1/JD combo in an ash tele and it sounds great, though it might be lacking some grunt for Foo Fighters type grind. If you have hotter guitars, get the SM-1/APS-2/JD combo. If you need this to be your "swiss army guitar", go with a STL-2 in the bridge with a tap option.
