Or, it could have been called, "How did I end up with so many black Fender copies?"
Anyway, my Dad likes going to garage sales. He called me up the other day, saying, "Hey, is $50 good for a guitar and an amp?" This is the same guy who got me a Squier SE (with a real pretty sunburst finish) and a Frontman 15 for $25... I don't know how he does it, I NEVER see guitars at yard sales.
Anyway, he bought everything after talking the guy down to $40, and brought it over. It turned out to be an "Austin" P-bass copy.

So I got a bass, an amp, a strap, a tuner, an instruction book, a pile of picks and a bag of "green leafy substance" (threw that one away!) for next to nuthin'.
I plugged it in, and got no sound. My Dad said he was told "It didn't work", and upon taking it apart, I figured out the ground wire came off.

I figured this was a lower-end bass, and it has the mini-sized pots. When I dissassembled it (it was FILTHY) the pickups kind of came apart-the magnets were stuck to the foam thingys.

Hey, that means I get to mod it now, right? :bigthumb:
THe body is all soliid wood, I was expecting plywood.

I poloshed it up, and there weren't any scratches, it was just a ton of dirt/funk. It looks new, now.
The electronics was what I expected, but once I put the ground wire back on, and glued the magnets back to the pups, it worked.

My "good" bass has "Select by EMG" pups, and I really like the way they sound, a couple years ago I decided to find more, y'know, in case I might need them for something. I got a P set (for $1.00, since I put in the minimum bid, and nobody else bid on them)
THey were super grungy, and looked like they got painted as well, so I wet-sanded them

The neck was dirty, and the fret board was super dry, so I cleaned it up and oiled it.

The nut fell off, and one of my kids lost it somewhere. I did end up finding it, but not until I ordered a new one... oops

I've been kind of a "Varitone" nerd since getting my Skylark that has one. I had found a guy on the bay that makes and sells Varitones, so I had gotten a couple. I NEVER use the Tone knob on my basses, and I wanted to try this instead

It didn't fit in the control route, because it wasn't routed the same shape all the way around

About 7 minutes with the Dremel took care of that
