NBD, or maybe NPD

Or, it could have been called, "How did I end up with so many black Fender copies?"
Anyway, my Dad likes going to garage sales. He called me up the other day, saying, "Hey, is $50 good for a guitar and an amp?" This is the same guy who got me a Squier SE (with a real pretty sunburst finish) and a Frontman 15 for $25... I don't know how he does it, I NEVER see guitars at yard sales.
Anyway, he bought everything after talking the guy down to $40, and brought it over. It turned out to be an "Austin" P-bass copy.

So I got a bass, an amp, a strap, a tuner, an instruction book, a pile of picks and a bag of "green leafy substance" (threw that one away!) for next to nuthin'.
I plugged it in, and got no sound. My Dad said he was told "It didn't work", and upon taking it apart, I figured out the ground wire came off.

I figured this was a lower-end bass, and it has the mini-sized pots. When I dissassembled it (it was FILTHY) the pickups kind of came apart-the magnets were stuck to the foam thingys.

Hey, that means I get to mod it now, right? :bigthumb:
THe body is all soliid wood, I was expecting plywood.

I poloshed it up, and there weren't any scratches, it was just a ton of dirt/funk. It looks new, now.
The electronics was what I expected, but once I put the ground wire back on, and glued the magnets back to the pups, it worked.

My "good" bass has "Select by EMG" pups, and I really like the way they sound, a couple years ago I decided to find more, y'know, in case I might need them for something. I got a P set (for $1.00, since I put in the minimum bid, and nobody else bid on them)
THey were super grungy, and looked like they got painted as well, so I wet-sanded them

The neck was dirty, and the fret board was super dry, so I cleaned it up and oiled it.

The nut fell off, and one of my kids lost it somewhere. I did end up finding it, but not until I ordered a new one... oops

I've been kind of a "Varitone" nerd since getting my Skylark that has one. I had found a guy on the bay that makes and sells Varitones, so I had gotten a couple. I NEVER use the Tone knob on my basses, and I wanted to try this instead

It didn't fit in the control route, because it wasn't routed the same shape all the way around

About 7 minutes with the Dremel took care of that

It all fits in there just fine now.
I dug in my parts box to find a black knob so everyting matched

I thought about doing all black screws, too, but I didn't have enough.

I wired it all up, got a set of my favorite flatwound strings, and it plays and sounds great! it's lighter than my other basses, too. Because the foam thingys under the pup are new, the pup is right up under the strings, so it's good and loud. So much so, that I ended up taking my other bass apart to re-foam that one. The pups in that one hadn't been out since it was new, in about 1985, so the pups barely came above the pick guard... Anyway, I got a great playing, sounding bass (and an amp!) for less than $100!

I ended up taking my other basses apart (again, ugh) because I've been playing this one all the time. Now, I want to finish those other ones up, but I've been using this one so much I might not get to them for...a while.

Ha ha, the first thing I thought when I saw it was, the kid who used to have this was gonna show up asking for his stash back. Or maybe the cops...

"Mom, where's my bass?"

"Honey we sold it because you weren't playing it."

"Mom!"
