NCD: New Collings Day

So, GAS got the better of me. I've worked some borderline crazy shifts lately (10 hours yesterday on my "day off" and over 16 hours Friday as an example), so I decided it was about time I found an acoustic that makes me smile as much as my Gretsch Black Falcon.

Not much to dislike about this one. I played it amongst quite a few Martins, Taylors and some local luthier stuff. This one packed as much punch as the dreadnoughts and while it doesn't have the booming lowend, it's a heck of a lot clearer throughout and the tone is a lot more forward and focused. It beat out all the D-18, D-28, OOO-18 and even a custom shop 0000 guitar (admittedly, by a very narrow margin). My Martin 000-15M is a decent guitar, but the harmonics, punch, clarity and balance of this thing destroys it (granted they're in completely different price structures). If I play out, I'll use the Martin. When I'm songwriting and recording it's going to be this thing.

Getting to shootout acoustics for 4 hours today and getting to pick it up for $1500 less than what they go new for sealed the deal. This is supposed to be braced like the "pre-war" Martins and I guess I see what it's about because it's very light weight and resonates/projects like crazy.

That is super nice! I played one of the Collings Clarence White models with Brazilian RW back and sides a while back and was blown away! Which I could have afforded the $8k price tag!

Re: NCD: New Collings Day

I love Collings guitars. There's a nice acoustic shop in town that carries them and he's always got a great selection. I'm usually not a fan of smaller body acoustics, being more of a dread and slope shoulder jumbo kinda guy, but the Collings OMs blow me away. They sound punchier than half the Martin D-28's and 32's that I've played. A D2HG is on my bucket list. And maybe a SoCo Deluxe.

Nice score! Enjoy the heck out of it.

Re: NCD: New Collings Day

Congrats dude, that looks like an incredible instrument. It's been a good NGD for both of us :)

Re: NCD: New Collings Day

Great guitar. I bet it has a bunch of songs in it and it's just waiting for you to release them. Have fun.

Re: NCD: New Collings Day

Killer guitar! Didn't you also own a Collings electric? Still have it?

I always respect NGD's more when it's evident someone worked harder to get something good.
Too many 'stay at home sons' around here! :D

Re: NCD: New Collings Day

Congrats!! Beauty! Ive never played a collings, but have heard they are stellar! Glad you got to treat yourself after being a slave to the grind...

I'm glad you guy approve and thanks for the kind words :)

Thanks Lucid; people pay crazy things for acoustics. While I'm starting to see the appeal I still think most of its overpriced. The 0000 custom shop Martin I played that same day was close to that price. If you've got it why not live it up?

Scha-Weeeet!

Very nice guitar, should be a lifer!

I hope so. At 30 years old, I'm sick of buying stuff and need to play more :)

I really liked your record with the Hasslers and was thinking you'd enjoy these things. I'm not fortunate enough to have a Coolings dealer nearby so I managed to luck out with having the German spruce OM available. I'm sure you get to see all of their good stuff. And yes, the CJ was on my short list I just ended up being floored by the presence of the OM verses the dreadnoughts I was putting against it.

Great memory! I had one of the 290s. It was the single cut dual p90 electric in TV yellow. It was a decent guitar, but the Lollars were too tame and the guitar was like the PRS I've gone through... more clear than ballsy so it got sold.

I like the work I do, but I've gotten into a habit of being a workaholic and there comes a time when you get burnt out on it. It sounds stupid, but you have to work towards something as an incentive to keep it up. Ever since, what? 2000? I've been on here buying and selling stuff incessantly. Its a sickness and that's why the last few years its been about condensing down to a few nice pieces and calling it quits. This is a big part of that.

I love the German spruce. The dealer here says the same thing. He prefers it to Sitka Spruce as well. It's just got a more rounded sound, and he says they open up faster and better.
