NCPWABKD: Wampler content

Aceman

I am your doctor of love!
So, I have finally joined the ranks of those who have a Compressor with a Blend knob.

Someone on another forum made an interesting statement that made me rethink my philosophy on the blend function. So, I now have a Wampler Ego Compressor (Killer deal!). I look forward to examining how it handles.

Blend knob is a huge advantage. Barber was the first to add it to a comp pedal I think.
Once you've used one with blend, anything without seems a bit lacking.

I have three compressors (and now this)

1. My Monte Albums modded Boss CS3. That is dedicated to my acoustic. Keeping there forever. Love it
2. An MXR Dyna, because 80's pop effect
3. A Lemon Squeeze by Mod Tone, which I use with my Tele for a little bit-o-pop

But, I have a reason to seek some sustain, with no impact on attack, and between the quality of Wampler, the price, and the desire to explore the latest...it was an all around win.

Also - have always been a fan of the Keeley for its transparency, but I think in retrospect what I was hearing was blend up high.

Congrats! I enjoy my Wampler Ego quite a bit, sounds great and can be just subtle enough

So I had some time to sit down and spend with this thing. As you all know, I am a long time anti-blend guy. Someone made a very good point to me about even if it is allowing all the attack through...it is changing the signal in ways a full on compressor would not. And, I can always use it full on for straight up compressor sounds.I was intrigued by this and had to agree. Even if not taming transients, it certainly would be a different sound.

So I have been playing with the Blend knob. What do I get with full comp vs full normal and in between things. My observations;

1. I can indeed make a nice compression sound in full on mode. The Tone knob on the Ego is pretty cool. Attack settings are, as always, key.

2. I can indeed generate a "sustain" only sound with the Blend mode

3. The Blend can be used more/less efficiently with the attack knob. So fast attack, but high blend tempers the attack, Slow attack, but low blend, yields a different response.

All in all, I have to say - I like the blend. It is definitely a tougher dial-in given the interactions....I can see non-comp people just using it as sustain almost. But...it definitely has some very Transparent shades in between, that are different than comp off or Just comp.

I think...but don't know that I might be able to make a very similar on off sound that is just a shade different...we'll see.

FYI: Tone full counter, and Blend full clock, gives me a Wampler Compressor with Attack Sustain and Level.
