Neat trick to improve string separation/note definition

I'm not sure if this is a know trick but here's what I did: I replaced the screws in a short screw humbucker so that, going from one string to the next, I alternate long pole screws with short screws.

So, below the first string there's a long screw, below the second a short, 3rd and another long one and so on ...

Poor note separation always bothered me in this pickup but now it seems fine. I didn't record anything to A - B the result, so it could be my mind is deceiving me. But I like to think it's not. Anyone else tried something like this and what was your experience?

I just adjust the pole pieces. Highest under the D string, lowest under the G string - all of the raised up a bit . . . then lower the whole pickup a smidge. Usually gives better string seperation on a humbucker and more even string to string balance.
