Necessary Effects

Ok Ok, I'm, ready to put together an effects pedal board. But, I only want the essential and necessary effects like Delay, Overdrive, phasers, and Chorus. How any of each do you think I need? I've got about $300 to drop on all my effects.
Im thinkin about a DD-3 delay, 2 DS-1's or 1 Tweak Buzz, Small stone phaser, and a chorus (BOSS or DOD) oh yeah and a Wha. I hope I can find these on Ebay cheap enough to fit my tight budget. If I'm hoplessly under budgeted, what would you chop off the list.

What help can you provide me? I want to sound like The Edge, Bryan Adams, Waylon, and David Gilmour. Will these things do it with a lil' ol' MIM strat i've got and my Fender Bassman amp? Which effects to think think that I just gotta have?

Will you help me with pedal selection? there are so many pedals and I've got so little time.

I would suggest if you're just getting your feet wet with effects to pick up something like the Boss or Digitech floor multi-effect units and dig into it.

$300 isn't going to buy you much for quality effects. I think you'd be better suited to getting as much bang for your buck and then perhaps singling out where the multi-effects units are lacking and then substituting better components into your chain.

I think he sees it the same as I do: Ho doesn´t generally recommend them, but under a certain budget they´re often the better choice if you need multiple effects, esp for less savvy users that are "just getting their feet wet"

for the Edge, and Gilmour, you need a delay with tap tempo- you need to sync the echos to the song. It is the only way to get that sound.

That's good advice guys. I think I'll hijack and take it. The Boss is probably better ain't it? as far as opinions go. Boss usually gets good reviews.

for what you are looking for and the money you got, i might suggest a boss me50.
i dont really like multifx much but its easy to use and doesnt sound half bad and i think they are $300. its got everything you need

if you want seperate pedals (which i prefer) if you had wah-overdrive-distortion-delay-phaser-chorus youd have a good setup. if you are playing live, do yourself a favor and get a tuner. i use a boss tu2 and really like it.

Wow, Skarekrough, do you really recommend those mulit-effects things? That's cool.

For the price point it's hard to beat most multi-effects units. Consider that for a hundred you're getting essentially a few distortions, a delay or two, chorus, tremolo, reverb, possibly a Wah, a volume and possibly a few more.

If you're JUST getting started it's a great oppurtunity to get a good overview of what's available out there and what the most common sounds are. By no means are they "professional grade" effects, but they are enough to educate the player as to what they sound like and how they respond.

I had a Boss ME-30 which was a great unit for me to really learn alot about effects on. It was noisy and had its quirks but it was a great educational tool and taught me alot about how effects "work" sonically. It was also "hands-on" enough so that I didn't feel like I was doing math every time I was programming it.

I'm a big fan of some of the newer Digitech units that allow USB connectivity and the Line 6 POD units that can act much in the same manner as multi-fx units. To me the more a player can tweak and mess with things the more they can come to understand about the intracicies of tone and sound. They get caught up in creating and learn alot about what they can and cannot do. Some of the limitations are on the device themselves, but you usually don't hit that wall for quite awhile.

I haven't quite convinced myself that I need one to replace the Boss ME-30 I unloaded, but I do get the desire now and again to tinker. As much as I love my vintage-voiced gear it's nice to have something just to tork with and make new and interesting sounds. To me that at times offsets the "work" that's involved in getting very authentic and vintage sounding tones.

I worry a bit about effects order. with the multi-units you don't have any choice right. if you want to go chorus to delay or delay to chorus you wouldn't have the flexibility to do that right? but at this point being new I may not need that flexibility.

What do you consider as "feet wetting" effects? Should a guy start with wha over delay? Or phaser over chorus? Is this an intimately personal decision depending on personal sonic goals? what are vintage effects as opposed to modern effects?

There are no real "set" rules in effects order, but more along the line of what's most likely to work out. And it is with this in mind that multi-effects units are typically engineered.

Now, I think there are some that will allow placement. I hate to mention it because I don't know which ones specifically, but I do seem to remember this being a new "feature" on one of the newer models.

The ME-30 wasn't all that great of a unit compared to what's available today. I only mentioned it because I've had personal experience with one in the past. Boss makes MUCH better units in the price range you mentioned.

I kind of liked the Boss ME-50. It has good delays and chorus effects. Also, it does give you some cool EQ options and comes in a sturdy metal enclosure.

If you like The Edge and Gilmour and are happy with your amp's distortion, I'd go with a Small Stone phaser and a tap tempo delay (I like my Line 6 Echo Park). Add a Tweak Fuzz, wah and chorus and you can make almost any classic guitar tone.

One thing to be careful with those multi-effects is that they are great to learn how all the effects sound and which you want, but unless it's a really good one the effects sometimes sound like cheap imitations. I started with a Zoom 505, great to have a bunch of different noises, but few quality sounds.

Tap temp delay...cool, noted...but, the Echo park only gets a rating of 7.7/10 on Zzounds. The Tap temp delay...what are others. I thought tap temp was method implimentation, use, not a pedal...but, what do I know...
