Neck Angle on a Neck thru Guitar?

I see a lot of vendors offing pre cut slabs of wood w/t truss rod added & headstock angled...YOU DO THE REST! I've been thinking about doing my own spin Inspired off a Firebird. My question is? If I'm using a TOM bridge How do I get the neck angle right? Or more so what's the Gibson Spec.? If I could calculate the right angle? i guess I could plane it in before the fretboard is glued on, But I realize there is NO MARGIN FOR ERROR !!:scratchch So what's the low down on neck thru's?

Re: Neck Angle on a Neck thru Guitar?

If the fingerboard is thick enough, my idea was to recess the TOM into the body and use string-through ferrules instead of a stop tailpiece. Carvin has started doing that in recent years if you want an idea how it looks.

The other way, and this works better if you're putting a top on the guitar, is to glue the wings on at an angle(so to speak) and then clean up the neck stick to match.

I'm aware of the recessed TOM, But that's plan B. I was thinking of using a nice figured maple top? But I'm leaning more toward a Pelham blue vintage look than a figured/fancy wood Boo-teeky look?

Re: Neck Angle on a Neck thru Guitar?

I think the neck pretty much has to be angled on a neck-through if you have a traditional, non-recessed TOM bridge.

Case in point: Jackson SL2HT. Gotoh TOM on threaded posts, strings through body with ferrules top and bottom. The neck is angled, about like what you see on a Gibson. I honestly can't tell if it's even the same piece of wood from nut to end-pin.

Re: Neck Angle on a Neck thru Guitar?

I just finished building a neck thru explorer myself!

I used 3 pieces of mahogany, on end to make them all quartersawn and glued them together. The Headstock, neck, and body tenon are all the same wood, no scarf joint for the headstock.

I still have my drawings and what not, but I'll have to scan them. It comes down to a LOT of trigonometry.

Also, how are you planning on putting a top on a firebird? are you not going to have the raised middle section?

You should check out www.man-cave-guitar.com. I built a 36 fret guitar from one of his roughed out necks. They are about $100 and he asks what bridge are going to use and will do the angle for you. He normally makes them for T.O.M. but for me he made it shallower for a recessed Floyd Rose.

hard to beat that price for a neck..

Re: Neck Angle on a Neck thru Guitar?

Gibson used to do a huge step for their zero degree necks (which they called 90 degree necks) But recessing the TOM al la Godin will work as well.
