Neck & Body question...? Help?

Hoss

Joyfulnoiseologist
i recieved the warmoth strat neck from brisk in the mail today...

Awesome maple/maple jumbo frets w/wizard shape & earvana nut...YOU ROCK BRISK!!!

anyways, it doesn't fit the strat body i have at all...theres like at least a half inch gap in the pocket on the sides...!!!

no biggie...i wasn't feeling this basswood body anyways...to much trouble to strip and have repainted and stuff...

soooo...would this neck fit a tele body if i purchased one...like a real fender tele body...or should i just get one from warmoth...or some of the builders on here...i didn't know if strats and teles have the same pocket or not...and whether the warmoth neck would fit...

thanks in advance for your help fellas,
mike

Re: Neck & Body question...? Help?

same pocket but the fronts of tele's are squared off whereas the fronts of strat necks are rounded

its very odd to me that it didn't fit your body AT ALL - hald an inch on either side - how wide was the neck that was in there originally?

Re: Neck & Body question...? Help?

Yes- your body was not strat specification if you had such wide gaps on the sides. The Warmoth neck is built to Fender Stat specs, and should fit a genuine Fender body perfectly. But hey- why go through all the hassle of buying a Fender body? If you go with a Warmoth body, you know it's going to fit perfectly. Also- people always put down poor little basswood as being a cheap, non-musical wood. I've heard of countless experiments where identical guitars were built, with only the body wood varying. The decision- basswood was deemed the best sounding! Good luck in your search for Ultimate Tone!

Re: Neck & Body question...? Help?

Hoss, it will fit, but it might be unstable. I would fit the neck on the body, then slowly make wooden inserts for it (they'll be hidden by the pickguard and keep the neck stable). If you're not up for making wooden inserts, just slowly fill the gaps with toothpicks, shoving them in as tight as you can.

Re: Neck & Body question...? Help?

Yeah Hoss, sounds like a Strat 'style' body you got....Warmoth necks should fit snugly into a Fender or even Squire body. Bluenote is right about the shape of the heel ends, I had to reshape my Tele pocket for the JV Strat neck to work, but those gaps are huge and just a totally wrong pocket for any Fender repop neck, I would'nt futz with trying to shim or make it fit, plenty of cheap bodies on Ebay that should fit right, sorry Bean, but 1/2" is way too big to fill with toothpicks IMO, screw holes, yeah. Good luck.

Re: Neck & Body question...? Help?

I wasnt talking about the strat style body, but the tele body that he wants to get. there will be a few gaps do to the heel shape.

Re: Neck & Body question...? Help?

thanks for the advice fellas...

the more i think about it the more i'm feeling a tele gib or maybe a flamed archtop dual humbucker tele...?!?!?!

so...to fit the neck it will have to be a custom order i suppose...!?

I've seen a pic of Hoss's body. It's more of a supper Strat style.
Many super strat's did have a slightly wider heel and a beveled heel.IMO-the best way to cure it would be to cut and drop a block in and re-route.Since Hoss wants to refinish the guitar it would be invisible after paint and clear anyway.
hmmm...that's a thought too...?!

Re: Neck & Body question...? Help?

ooo, put duel p-90's in it....ooooooo

ive played a guitar that has a strat neck and headstock with a tele body with 2 paf p-90's....ooooo its sweet....

Re: Neck & Body question...? Help?

hehe, puckboy has my Custom P90 loaded gold top...those would be killer in a Tele, next project...I like the Tele-Gib idea Hoss. That neck you have should be a 'standard' heel...just measure the width and make sure the pocket of any body you buy will fit...if it's a Tele body you're after, just make sure whoever makes it knows to shape the pocket for a Strat...if you just buy a Tele body, some Dremel work to round off the pocket is pretty simple.

Re: Neck & Body question...? Help?

Hoss -

If you order a body from Warmoth or USA Custom Guitars, there's no reason they can't put a "Strat" pocket in a "Tele" body. Might be an "upcharge" from Warmoth, but Tommy at USACG wouldn't tag you with one. IMHO the tighter the neck/pocket fit, the better sustain and sound transfer you'll get.

Also, if your neck only has 21 frets or the neck sits "proud" of the body at all, you'll be able to see the gaps at the corners where the rounded strat heel doesn't fit a squared off tele neck pocket. I'd be a little worried about intonation too - with a strat heel in a tele neck pocket, will the neck be exactly the right distance from the bridge?

Hope this helps - good luck on your project!

Re: Neck & Body question...? Help?

yeah...i'm pretty much set on a tele body for this neck...

I JUST LOVE TELES!!! can't help it...LOL

i've missed having one since i sold my 96 MIA to Puckboy...

and i've always wanted one with hums anyways...soooo i'm gonna go for it!!!

when it gets down to it...i'm sure more questions will follow...i'm so glad that i found a place like this where i know i can find the answers

you guys are great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Neck & Body question...? Help?

Hoss,
if you decide on an archtop, you'd probably go with USA, since Warmoth doesn't have an archtop
there's a nice archtop tele in USA's gallery

if you go that route, just talk to Tommy and tell him what neck you have, and they can make sure the pocket fits perfectly

Re: Neck & Body question...? Help?

Yeah...just trace the neck heel and send the tracing to whoever's going to make the body. Tommy at USA Guitars seems to be the current favorite...

Re: Neck & Body question...? Help?

i'm thinking of something along this design.... :32:  :32:

Re: Neck & Body question...? Help?

Hoss,
nice design ...

personally, I'd consider strat style controls on a back loading body - to me, they feel more natural, but others don't like 'em, so YMMV

although I'm doing my own finish, the guys that USA uses have some great looking jobs in their gallery

Re: Neck & Body question...? Help?

You can get a Strat neck pocket in a Tele body for no additional charge at Warmoth but doing a carved top on a Tele is a significant up charge.

Re: Neck & Body question...? Help?

hmmm...i'm starting to think tones with this thing already...(imagin that)

anyways, would a mahogany body with a maple cap be to bright with the maple/maple neck, or should i go with solid mahogany, koa, or korina...i'm not big on bright sounding guitars...my moore has a mahogany body maple cap, but it has a mahogany/rosewood neck...?

or could i just alleviate the brightness with the right pups and amp settings
