Neck Bow Back.

Bought a Epiphone neck that seems to have pretty severe bow back. Any ideas on how to undue the bow. I'm going to clamp it to a straight surface for now. Will heat help. Anybody here had to fix this problem?

Re: Neck Bow Back.

Sometimes necks that seem to have excessive back bow when not under tension straighten out once they are strung up. So, if you haven't seen the neck with string tension applied, don't assume the neck will be bad.

If, on the other hand, you have had the neck under tension and still can't get rid of the back bow by loosening the truss rod, you have a problem that you can waste a lot of time trying to fix. You will probably get a bunch of advice here on how to "fix" a back bowed neck. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Sometimes the "fix" will fail after a certain period of time.

Re: Neck Bow Back.

Outside of the above, find a luthier in your area. Not some dude that works the bench at GC that can changes strings....but a luthier.

Re: Neck Bow Back.

I had a badly bowed neck on my acoustic that required removal of the neck and heating the neck to restore the proper curvature, I took mine to a luthier and he fixed me up good. It's been 8 years no problems.

Re: Neck Bow Back.

I'm not sure but there is a chance it has one of those truss rod things. Messing with it might fix this, unless the rod is broken, in which case you are screwed.

Re: Neck Bow Back.

The truss rod is suspect. Ive got it clamped to a flat steel bar now with a small piece of wood under thge 6th fret where the bow seems to start. Will leave it out in the AZ sun for a couple days. After that I'm going to heat it to about 175F for an hour in an oven. If that doesn't work there's a good chance it's junk, oh well.

Re: Neck Bow Back.

Did you actually try to see if turning the truss rod (unscrewing, counter-clockwise) alters the bow? Can you feel the truss rod having any effect at all? As uOpt says, if truss rod is OK then go to a luthier, otherwise throw it away. Also you might try heavier string gauge as a last resort, before dumping it.

Re: Neck Bow Back.

Tried turning the truss rod. The inside hex is stripped somewhat so no effect but not 100% sure on that. I'll give it another try tonight. Thanks Greekdude.

Re: Neck Bow Back.

Nah, you gotta fix this, even if microwaving it makes it straighter today. That won't last.

uOpt, it's been clamped to a sturdy steel bar for over 36 hours when I get home tonight. Checked it lastnight & it had straightened out quite a bit. Stewmac has a tool for grabbing stipped out hex nut on the truss rod hopefully that'll keep me from having to remove the fretboard to install the truss rod I have in the broken neck that's hex isn't stripped. If it's alot straighter I'll try it on the guitr tonight. Cheers.
