Neck Fuglybucker with modded bridge P-Rails?

I was reading some threads about magnet swaps in P-Rails and decided upon an A4 for the P90 and a A8 for the rail with the rail oriented towards the bridge. I say "decided", but I'm still in the hypothetical stages for this guitar. I might not get to it for a while as I'm working on a friend's guitar right now.

But anyway, I was considering a fuglybucker for the neck to match the ugly aesthetic. I also thought about changing the magnets in the Fugly to better match tone wise with the P-Rail.

I'm considering putting this combo in a Tele with the following wiring concept: standard 3-way pickup selector switch, volume, and a rotary 3-way. The rotary will switch from outer coils, to inner coil, to series.

Any suggestions on potential magnet swaps or wiring changes?

Edit: As a side note, what's the current opinion on the Fuglybucker neck? I know some people didn't like it at first because it's design process wasn't the smoothest, with flawed and biased polls in its initial conception. But since that's cooled off a bit, what do y'all think of it?

Every player I've come across who was able to get over the design process/aesthetic issues of the Fuglies and has actually played them has been quite impressed by them.

I'd suggest trying the stock Fuglybucker neck before messing with the magnets. It has a very unique construction with two magnets in an "L" pattern and its voicing was finely tuned around them by MJ after a LOT of work.

There's a good chance that attempting to swap the magnets will actually degrade the performance of that particular wind, so I'd give the original design a solid chance first if I were you

My only suggestion is to wait until you hear it- some pickups' specs can make them sound one way in our mind, but when we actually hear them with the actual piece of wood, they may be fine (or we change our idea of which pickups we want). My go-to pickup choice in one guitar won't work in other guitars that are the same shape but made of different body woods.

Cristopher, the Fuglies are NOT the kind of p'up that gracefully takes mag swaps.

HTH,

I assumed the rail wouldn't, but I was considering swapping the other bar. I wasn't going to buy one just to change the magnet, but I wanted some information to see how others experience the pickups repsonse.

I've got a Fuglybucker (stock) in the neck of one of my guitars. In the bridge I've also got a P-Rails with Rail coil next to the bridge with an A8 magnet. The P-90 coil has an A5 magnet. This setup sounds terrific. There is nothing that I would change about it.

Good luck in your personal quest.

Just out of curiosity, what type of guitar is it? Because I'm speculating putting this combo in a Tele, possibly with a Gibson scale conversion neck.

I got to thinking too, what tonal diferences could I expect with the A5 under the P90 as opposed to an A4?
