Neck humbucker to match SH-14?

New member
Hi all,

New member here. I am putting an SH-14 Custom 5 in my PRS Custom (I have the SH-14 in one of my other guitars and love it... not crazy about the stock HFS that's in the PRS now). Anyway, does anybody know of an ideal neck pickup to mate with the tonal qualities of the SH-14?

Cheers,
Dave

Welcome to the forum. I don't have first hand experience with PRS guitars so I can't give advice based on your guitar. What body wood is the PRS? I was happy with a Custom 5 (bridge)and a 59 (neck) in a Les Paul for a while but I change setups alot.

Re: Neck humbucker to match SH-14?

Thanks -- the PRS has a mahogany body with a carved maple top. The stock pickups are very mid-rangy, especially the bridge pickup. The bass pickup is better, but I'm afraid it might be a bit mismatched with the Custom 5.

I had the C-5 in a PRS CU-24 fo quite awhile and it sounded exceptional in that guitar. I had a 59n in my PRS but in hindsite the PGn would have probably been a better choice. The CU 24 was a little bright and sterile sounding with the 59n and the extra warmth and mids from the PGn would have helped even out the neck position tone.

Welcome to th e Forum!

You might consider an Alnico-2 Pro for warmth, or a Jazz for clarity. The neck pup is hard to get right. I'm not that familiar with PRS. But in Les Pauls with Mahogany/Maple, the neck pup always tends to sound dark.

PGN, APH, JAZZ, in the neck would match the custom 5.

Re: Neck humbucker to match SH-14?

Pearly Gates neck would be my choice since it seems to match up perfectly with the C5. I didn't like the C5/'59 combo, too much of a tone gab EQ-wise IMO.

It is but only because of all the nice people hanging around here, really this is the friendliest, most helpful board I've ever posted on.

And we'd be glad to know what you picked

Good luck! :)

If your guitar is bright you could try the Demon sh-12 or the Jazz is always a good choice .
