I know what he means. On a guitar with a 5-way switch, you can add a mini toggle that is wired to turn the neck pickup on no matter where the 5-way is. This allows neck/bridge combination and even all three on at once. As to whether you wire it as neck on or bridge on, that's personal preference really, they both do the same thing. The only difference is whether all three pickups are on in position 2 or 4. I wired mine with neck on.

Ultimately I will have:
A GFS "Hot Rails" type in the bridge connected to a 5 position
rotary switch to do the series/ parallel/ out of phase thing.
An EMG in the middle, and an old Dimarzio HS2???
in the neck w/ the standard 5 way blade switch.
Soooooo, while I have her apart I was going to chuck the
scratchy old volume pot & mabye throw a push- pull pot
in there for a little extra bling.

I do what I call the "7-sound mod". I use a humbucker in the bridge and wire it up so it automatically splits in position #4. I then add a toggle or a push-pull pot to engage the neck pickup. Here's what I end up with:
(Switch in - Standard)
1 - Neck pickup
2 - Neck and middle
3 - Middle pickup
4 - Middle and bridge split
5 - Bridge pickup
(Switch out - Neck and bridge engaged)
1 - Neck
2 - Neck and middle
3 - Neck and middle
4 - Neck, middle and bridge split
5 - Neck and bridge
There are other variations of course but I like this one and have used it for years.
