Neck pickup for a Schecter Omen Extreme 6 FR

Hi there,

I'm about to buy a Schecter Omen Extreme 6 FR and will replace the stocks pickups. The bridge position is going to be a Custom TB-5, but I'm not sure which pickup for the neck position.

I was considering for the neck: Jazz, Full Shred neck, DiMarzio D Activator X neck...

I play thrash/death metal like Death, Exodus, Sepultura, Dark Angel, Slayer etc, and want a neck pickup that has good note separation, nice harmonics, good for fast shredding and kind of warmish tone...

Suggestions?

thx

I would think that good note separation and warmish tone are kind of opposites on the sound spectrum. Of course it's always easier to add bass than it is to remove it, so brighter pickups like the Jazz, Full Shred neck, D-Activator Neck, and Evolution Neck should be on the list to consider.

I would also put forth the DiMarzio Liquifire as well as the SD Screamin Demon as awesome viable options :)

How is the Liquifire? I've been wanting a non-scooped, smooth, vocal-like, yet tight neck pickup for use mainly under heavy overdrive, and I find the DiMarzio PAF Pro too chirpy, attacky and scooped and the Duncan '59 too scooped and bloated.

I would describe it as clear, warm and articulate with the cleans and full, rich, thick with distortion/overdrive. What I like about the Liquifire and the Screamin Demon in the neck position is that they are both very articulate while getting that warm full neck tone. The only neck pickup I like better is a Fender Fat 50 (but that is a single coil.)

FWIW Here are two demos that I did that include these two in the neck positions

Liquifire

Screamin Demon

Awesome, thank you! Seems like the Liquifire is a bit darker/smoother than the demon, eh? How about the bass? Which is thinner and which is fatter?

How do you think a Liquifire would balance out with a JB in the bridge?

^I think the 85 in the neck can be alright if you've got an 85 in the bridge as well. Otherwise, yeah, I don't like how it matches the 81 in the bridge either, personally.

SrDeMaFp had a set of D-Activators on sale in the Trading Post not to long ago for a good price. I would check it out. Unless shipping might be a problem.

Most welcome! I would say the Liquifire is smoother and darker with more bass than the Screamin Demon. Neither would really be thin–but I would say the Liquifire feels fatter to me.

I never thought of that combo but I think it would be awesome! The Liquifire is higher output than the Screamin Demon (not that different output hurt my Dimebucker&Screamin Demon combo by any means!) and would balance out well with the JB IMO.

I see. I have a 81/85 set in a Jackson and I like it. Not my favourite combo though, prefer passives pickups..

If you mean you've got an 81 in the bridge and 85 in the neck, switch them. They could become your favorite combo. :D

I once had an 85/60 combo in an epi. I actually really liked it but no longer own that guitar
