Neck pickup for hair metal

Which passive trembucker spaced neck humbucker should I get for hair metal? It will be in combination with an EMG 89 in the bridge (yes I know how to do the wiring) and on a Strat-style Charvel. I was looking at Dimarzio because they are cheap, but I will get whatever sounds good. Thanks

You do not need a trem spaced pickup for the neck position just for the bridge position. A PG or 59 neck should match up well with the 89 in the bridge as it is the lower output EMG I believe.

Re: Neck pickup for hair metal

how do you do the wiring for active/passive? I tried it with each having their own pots, and it buzzed like crazy! Help would be appreciated.

If you can mix it, I'd say a JB in the neck, or an 81.

How bout a Jazz neck?

Well since you're Steve Vai, you should be quite familiar with Dimarzio Evolutions because they were specifically designed for you! ;) :laugh2:

For Seymour Duncan, try the Jazz or JB.

If you want to try DiMarzio, try the PAF Joe. I find it to be more defined than the PAF Pro.

What values of pots were you using? There's no good way to do it without a preamp. Get an EMG PA2 on the passive, and boost it up to the gain of the active using the trim pot. It will also match the impedance. Then you can just use 25k pots.

Ah ok, I had each with there own pots, EMG's using 25k, Passive with 500k. Thanks.
