neck pickup for korina V

Brown Note

I have a jackson korina V with unknown bridge pickup that's just heavenly. The neck positions jazz at the moment but it's too sterile and flat sounding and cleans are thin and ear piercing. The bridge however is very hot with thick mids.

I'm looking for clear and gritty solo sounds with articulation and with bright attack. I use somewhat classic heavy rock/metal distortion but I still need nice cleans from neck. What pickup should i be getting?

Re: neck pickup for korina V

you can find those qualities in either a '59, a PGn, or a phat catB. it depends on what you're specifically looking for though. a '59 will have better top end clarity and low end responce; a PGn will have full mids and a sweet grit to it; the phat cat in stock trim will have a bit of both of those qualities, but with a certain airyness since it's a p-90 type of pickup. imo a phat cat with a4/a5 magnets is the best choice, but i'm unfairly biased towards that particular setup since i used it myself for a while:laughing:

Re: neck pickup for korina V

I'm surprised that the Jazz isn't doing it, but try a PG, '59, or a Seth maybe. The Seth will be articulate and warm.

p.s. The Phat Cat like SUper Rad said, is a great idea. I hadn't thought of that.

I was gonna say go for the Seths. get old school. Old school wood, old school pup. Get distortion from the amp.

Is the guitar really limba, or just that color?

Re: neck pickup for korina V

First thing I'd do is try an A2 magnet in your neck PU, which will give color and mids, & take off some treble. May give you something close to a PGN.

I've got a stack of spare A2's; PM me & I'll send you one.

Re: neck pickup for korina V

The guitar is full korina(african limba) with ebony fretboard. It is very light and resonates extremely well. The guitar needs a bit less high mids from the pickups to tame down it's wild sound.

I've already sold the jazz, thus magnet swaps are out of the question. Pgn sounds intriquing, but the '59n seems also good. Pgn would be a bit hotter, yes?

Re: neck pickup for korina V

PGn isn't actually that hot, it's just got this certain grittyness to it in the upper mids that people percieve as "hot". but you want less upper mids? go '59 then.

Hmm... isn't an A2 Jazz basically an A2 Pro?

If the hum doesn't bother you (I'm overly anal about it, alas), nothing rocks like a P-90!

Re: neck pickup for korina V

one more idea to fly through the community, Alnico 2 pro. It's something that the wizard recommended, though there is no option for korina wood guitar.

I had screamin' demon just laying around and i hooked it up. Best way to describe the sound: A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! The sound is beefed up but not muddy, there's definetly the power I need and the shimmering highs just makes my eyes water!
