neck pickup for sg?

I have an epiphone SG and i'm looking for a good pickup for the neck. The body is Korina and i'm looking for something that i can coiltap that has a smooth sound... nothing too bright but nothing muddy either. I was looking at pearly gates, but i've never actually played one so i don't know the tone. I also came across the Gibson P-94, and was wondering if you guys know anything about these.

Re: neck pickup for sg?

I say go for a alnico 2 pro, very very smooth. The pearly gates would be too bright in your guitar, sence chances are your body is not made out of solid Korina but a mix of a bunch of diffrent wood

Re: neck pickup for sg?

i figured since the body give it a bright tone, I have a JB in the bridge right now and playing through a marshall tsl122..... yeah.. bright

I read some where that the P-94r wasn't very bright..... I donno, i'm kinda intrested

While the PGn isn't what I would call bright, it does have an aggressive voicing to the upper mids, which makes it jump out of the mix.

Its not the smoothest pickup. :)

If you want something smooth and very balanced, the Alnico II Pro would do the trick. If you want smooth with a bit of old school honk to the mids, check out the Seth Lover model.

I don't usually us my neck pu dirty... mostly on cleans. I'm trying to get the most diversity out of my guitar as possible though. I got the grunge from the JB.. I really do like Mids a lot. I'll look into both of those of course. thanks.
the main thing is that the stock epi neck pu sounds like cheese no matter how i tweak.

Re: neck pickup for sg?

the seth isnt 4 cond so couldnt be split unless you got a special 4 cond version.
the aph is probably a good option.

i DONT like the p94 all that much, kinda flat and lifeless

I have a '59 in the neck right now. It's pretty good. I had a Pearly Gates neck at one point and that had nice cleans. Prob. better than the '59. Lastly I had a Phat Cat for about two weeks. Interesting pup but didn't really sound like a p90 to me.

Re: neck pickup for sg?

Check out Dimarzio's Virtual Vintage PAF or Classic PAF. Both are wonderful sounding pickups played clean...or distorted. You can add a nice array of wiring mods ( series/parallel/split ) with a push pull pot or mini-switch.

Duncans A-2 and 59 are killer. I do believe you can order the seth with 4 conductor. Seths are hard to beat in the neck position.

Another good un is the Dualtone ll by Steve Kersting. You'll need a mini on-on-on switch for this one, but the resutling tones ( PAF, P-90, Strat ) are worth it.

On the budget end, the Stew Mac Golden Age can be split from full bucker to single. Great sounding, cost effective pickups.
