Hey everybody I need some advice. I know this has been covered but maybe not for my exact guitar and music style. I am replacing the stock SE pickups in my SE Custom 24 guitar. Mine is the Tim Mahoney model so it is a stoptail (the reason I bought it instead of regular SE Custom 24). I have pretty much decided on the Custom in the bridge for doing Rock/Metal/Prog stuff like Dream Theater, Mastodon, Tool, Karnivool. I am now looking for a pickup for the neck and it is pretty much between a '59 and a Jazz although some people seem to like the Pearly Gates quite a bit too. I use the neck pickup for cleans and some distorted leads.

I know the '59 can get a little boomy. Will my 24 frets help reduce some of the bass?
I liked the jazz I had in an SG before, but it was 22 frets and slightly different wood combo.

Am I totally off in my decision? These are the two pickups the infamous "Tone Wizard" suggested. I think he is usually right. Let me know.

the 59n should be nice in that guitar and matches well with the custom

Re: Neck Pickup PRS SE Custom 24

IMO, the Tone Wizard is completely out to lunch.

Custom/'59n pairing is good. I think that I would probably swap the magnet in the '59 from A5 to A4.

Re: Neck Pickup PRS SE Custom 24

I had '59/Custom SH-5 combo on my LTD Eclipse but on the LP style body the 59 was way too boomy and I changed it to Jazz, which sounds perfect. However I think the 59 will be quite good on the PRS body as it is lighter on wood near the neck. Don't know if that is the actual cause of the boominess of the 59, but I've heard many LP style guitar owners tell the same tale and very few strat style guitar owners ever complain about 59 being too boomy.

I own a PRS Custom SE 24 myself also and I was thinking of getting 59/Custom combo for it, but then I got DiMarzio Air Norton and D-Sonic dirt cheap and went for them instead... for now.

Also Hi. As I'm new to the forums.

Nothing has ever worked in the neck slot of my PRS like the Distortion neck model. It's perfect.
