Neck pickup recommendation for Gibson SG? Black Winter?

Ok, so far I've tried:

-Stock 490R: muddy & weak
-Jazz neck: too bright and weak (but I love it in my Les Paul)
-Distortion neck: actually pretty good, lots of sustain, but too bassy for cleans
-'59 neck: too bright and sterile, not at all what I expected

I put a Custom SH-5 in the bridge and love it. I play hard rock & old school metal. I really like the black winter neck from the samples I heard: high output, but brighter than the SH6n and has good cleans too. But looking at the pic the polepiece screws look kinda rusty. What do they look in real life? Are they like the other Duncan models?

The polepiece screws are finished in that smoky chrome kinda finish sorta like the Ibanez cosmo black hardware. They are not chrome like your Custom probably is.

Black winter is dark and clear. It has a bit of bark in it too when you bring it close to the strings. Very good, only downside is I wouldn't call it "smooth" which is one of the things I like in a neck pickup.

For me the black winters were very flat and sterile, no character. I had to make significant changes to my amp setup to get anything out of them, which made it harder to switch guitars also.

yeah, the poles are similar to what Ibanez calls 'cosmo black' on the Edge trems.

when I first checked out the Black Winter set, it really reminded me a lot of the tone of BKP Aftermath with the 'hex bolt' option for the poles (yeah, the offer it with different poles, which does alter the tone *shrug*).

it has a higher resonant peak than the DDn, but not as much as the Jazz neck.

the BW neck doesn't really remind me of any other Duncan neck pickup, most of which have the slightly fuller character when you get lower than the 10th or 12 fret. it sort of reminds me more of all the qualities I like in many of the DiMarzio neck humbuckers.

Yeah, they are kinda dark chrome color in person. But they can probably be ordered with any color poles.
