Neck pickup to be opposite of Black Winter?

Hey everybody! I've got a mahogany body Schecter that I'd like to throw a new neck pickup in. I have already installed a Black Winter in the bridge. A 59 sh-1n is currently sitting in the neck but I'd like some greater sounding treble and bass but not a neck up that I can't at least play the opening to don't fear the reaper.

I am considerng the pearly gates or sh-2 jazz.

What do you guys suggest?

Why not try the Black Winter for the neck position as well?

The purpose of purchasing the Black Winter was to get the best tone for the bridge pickup that I could possibly hear and find. The same goes for the neck. I'd like a pickup that has a rich treble response with nice bass and at least some mids. Think One by Metallica but even better.

I already have the Roland Jazz Chorus so I know what the guitar sounds like with that tone.

Then definately get the BW neck. If you want cleans like One, it will do it great!

I'll think about it. I'd be leaning more towards the SH-2 based on the Seymour Duncan main site. I compared the PG vs the Jazz. I have heard that the sh-2 is extremely versatile...and have heard the the BW neck is similar to a 59...which is what I already have.

BW Neck isn't close at all in spec to a 59. They should sound quite different. I only have direct experience with the '59 in the neck, but I would be very surprised if they sounded similar.

59 Neck DC Resistance: 7.43 k

BW Neck DC Resistance: 13.00 k

59 Neck Magnet: Alnico V

BW Neck Magnet: Ceramic

Neck pickup to be opposite of Black Winter?

The BW neck is actually the opposite of what I thought it was gonna be, it suits the BW bridge very well & I now use it as my main neck pup in my guitars. It's got singing lead tones but cleans up really nice. It's got a nice rich sound but with great high & mid response, so I'd at least give it a shot

Re: Neck pickup to be opposite of Black Winter?

It sounds like you want a more pronounced scoop from the 59'n. Also, Metallica used almost no mids in their AJFA tones. What do you mean by better? More midrange? Anyway, you might be able to dial in the tone you want with the Black Winter Neck. It's superb sounding and very versatile, and you won't regret it.

Thanks for all the replies! When I say better I mean like a bell sound...insanely rich treble with great bass and the mids still present.
Judging by what Phoenix said, it sounds like what I am looking for. I can't compare it to the pearly or jazz because they have no sound samples for it still.

Since you mention Blue Oyster Cult, why not use a Wilde L90 in the neck? That is the pickup they used I believe and it sounds like what you describe and is relatively cheap.

I would love to hear what the BW sounds like in standard tuning, if you could oblige that would be much appreciated.

Which L-90? There are several versions. My guitar is a Schecter Blackjack C-1 2006. Mahogany body...maple neck with rosewood fretboard. I've got grover chrome 502 locking tuners in it...black winter bridge and sh-1n with metal humbucker rings and 500k (cts?) Pots. I'd like a neck tone that has every note vividly pronoinced. The notes should be able to strike hard or soft depending on how I pick. I'm looking for the most detailed....high detailed treble with welcome Home sanitarium like bass notes buf . Think the best...most clean neck pickup with insane articulation in all frequencies.

I'd go with a 4h L90 for that myself.

A very articulate humbucker that has some single coil like clarity going on. It can be a bit too clear on some guitars.

Re: Neck pickup to be opposite of Black Winter?

If your going for the L-90 make sure it will fit the neck slot as I have a L90 but can't install it yet as I need to widen the neck cavity first which will be done on Wed hopefully.
For what you describe the L90 should fit the bill I have the 2.8H version myself.

Yeah I actually just called Becky. She said any of the L90s will work great and keep the high end. She recommended the 4h.

Re: Neck pickup to be opposite of Black Winter?

correct me if im wrong, but you could also raise the adjustable pole pieces on the treble and bass side of the 59 to get a little more of each

True. Buying a new pickup is a good excuse to replace the alpha b500k pots in the blackjack with an rs super pot 500k for the volume and a CTS 500k audio taper for the tone. Unless you guys know of a better tone pot?

Re: Neck pickup to be opposite of Black Winter?

If you want a fast turning pot you could look at the YJM speed pots.

Yeah? That sounds pretty slick. I guess what I'm really looking for is a pot that I can ramp up very smoothly and I can dial in my tone perfectly. Are Bourns made in USA? I'd like one that will do amazing volume swells, is made in the USA and has perfect smooth transition.
