Neck Position: YJM Fury vs STK6 vs STK7

Re: Neck Position: YJM Fury vs STK6 vs STK7

It dependes, fury is fatter and I like it better for soloing witj high gain, s6 is nice top for that too, just muy opinión. But s6 i like it better for just overdrive, clean and quack os better too, i use ssl-1 in the middle.

What type of guitar, what will it be paired with, what style music?

Re: Neck Position: YJM Fury vs STK6 vs STK7

Called the custom shop to order an F spaced JB Antiquity and while I had MJ on the phone I discussed my guitar and what I wanted from the neck single. She took notes the entire time and is gonna build it. So nice and totally pro all the way. Duncan custom shop gets a massive thumbs up in the customer service department! More companies should adopt these practices.

Re: Neck Position: YJM Fury vs STK6 vs STK7

So how would you describe the final single coil? What is it closer to? What will they tweak (if they explained) in CS?

Re: Neck Position: YJM Fury vs STK6 vs STK7

I see this discussed a lot. Maybe this will help someone else or they will find it appealing to their tastes. She didn't explain what she will tweak and I didn't ask. We discussed my guitar and my setup. I play Charvel with H/S 1 vol no tone control and a 3 way switch. I love the JB in the bridge. And I like it with a 500k pot. 250k doesn't sound as "open" or "full range" to my ears. But, problem is, I like single coils in the neck and when you use 500k pots, again, just my opinion, something gets lost in translation...unless you wanted to use a really hot rails type pickup which I do not prefer. I prefer low output or medium output single coils in the neck. High output loses the character. Again IMHO. If I'm going to use a Hot Rails in the neck I might as well just buy guitars with full size humbuckers in the neck. So, the problem, as is usually the case, is I want the best of both worlds. I want to use my JB with a 500k pot and get all the screaming harmonics and loud bark, but when I switch to the neck pickup I need something more vintage and smooth that will take gain well and will not hum...AND work well with a 500k pot.

I told MJ she had free reign to do whatever she wanted as long as it fit the bill. She said it would be a stack. That's it. I said, "Can it be done?" And she said, "Yes it can be done and I will build it for you."

I can't say enough about the extreme level of customer service that went on here. Very impressive.

Re: Neck Position: YJM Fury vs STK6 vs STK7

Based on what you have described I would think a noiseless P90 in a single coil size could be "my" starting point, I remember P90s are meant to use 500k pots.

Edit: Acutally now after I am putting more thinking intou your thread I realize I had overlooked P90 tone which is very nice indeed and more suited for 500k pots.

Is there a Strat style/size neck position single coil that has a convincing P-90 tone?

Re: Neck Position: YJM Fury vs STK6 vs STK7

I like P-90's but that's not what I'm going for. Going for more of a vintage to moderate gain strat sounding neck pickup that will match up well with the JB and be tailored specifically to work with 500k volume pot and handle some gain while retaining clarity but not being shrill. I have other guitars that have H/S with 500k vol pot and the neck single is always very shrill and not round and warm like a strat with 250k pots

Re: Neck Position: YJM Fury vs STK6 vs STK7

cant you just add a 500K resistor only on the neck pickup to make it 250K and leave the bridge at 500k?

Re: Neck Position: YJM Fury vs STK6 vs STK7

Would be wonderful if some one made a stacked pot that had one being 500k and the other a 250k. Then you could hook up one PU to one and the other to the other one and control both with one knob.
