Hi!

I´m thinking of swaping out the DMZ/IBZ pups for some real DiMarzios in my Ibanez. I´ll go for the Fred in the bridge position.

I was thinking of a Paf Pro or a Air Norton for the neck. I like Satch´s bluesy tone from the Paf Pro but I also like the Gilbert one.
I just want some clear sounding and articulate pups.

I´ve tried the JB for my Ibanez but the pups of the Ibanez are joined directly into the wood of the guitar and I´ll have to change the pup in its dimension.

Also, the AN is a bit less expensive over here but is it worse? The Paf Pro has more of the imho important treble for the neck position.

So, what are your thoughts.

The Air Norton sounds smoother, darker and jazzier than the Paf Pro, while the latter one's more articulate IMO.

Are you sure about the Fred? It sounds very nasty under high-gain, especially with the Edge trem. The Norton could be also nice, if you'd like a beefed-up Fred. Or... if you like Greg Howe's tone (and I know you like it, LOL), you could also consider an Air Zone or Breed for the bridge position. Howe uses a Dimarzio prototype called 'Sunny-caster', and Dimarzio's customer support once told me that it was very close to the Breed.

Thanks for the info!!
Yeah..I like it a lot :D

So, Air Norton in the neck and Air Zone or Breed in the bridge..sounds like a killer combo! I gotta check the site again to compare the 2 bridge pups.

Thanks for the reply!

Hey strange sound. I am getting ready to put some duncans in my RG. As far as altering the pickup to mount it would'nt you just have to round off the mounting ears? It is my understanding that the physical pick up is the same size, it's just that duncan uses square ears where the other guys use triangular shaped ears.

Satch uses the PAF Joe now and Gilbert has been using PAF Pro's for years. I put a PAF Pro in the neck of my RG750 and it absolutely owns. Great pup...

Hm..would you stick then to a TB-5?

Yeah, that´s what I´ve heared too :) Did you see the DiMarzio Paul Gilbert video on the Racerx site? He has a really great tone..ok he uses a good amp but this "ahw" of the pups are quite cool!

Too many pickups on the market haha :smack: :laugh2:

Cheers forum-mates!

You could send an e-mail with your question, musical preferences, etc. to Dimarzio's customer support. They will help you decide.

From what I know, the Air Zone is a bit more aggressive-sounding and has more highs and harmonics than the Breed, and a more "airy" character. Still very smooth sounding IMO, and handles high-gain very well, it's my favourite from Dimarzio. The Breed is similar but darker-sounding, even smoother, less raw in the mids. Some of my friends commented on it as "closed" sounding and moody because of its dark character. The Air Zone cuts through easier.

The Air Norton has a rather warm, soft and bassy sound when compared to the Paf Pro. If needed for blues, I'd rather get the Paf Pro. If needed for jazz and a smooth fusiony tone, I'd rather get the Air Norton.

Thanks!!!!!

Ok..Norton will be the neck one and the Air Zone in the bridge. I think that´ll fit my style of playing.

Re: Neck PU for my Ibanez

Why Dimarzios when there are 59/Jazz/Full Shred? FYI, I use Jazz in RG421 and I get more than I wished for.

Re: Neck PU for my Ibanez

te air norton is really really bad its very hard to get alot of unique sound out of them if possible at all... there very low gain pickups so they sound liek a mark 4 ugg... if you want to sound like john petrucci or cky or something then get the norton... but if you want sustain and an all around versitile pickup thats great for anything then get the PAF PRO.
