Neck Pup for Tele Project

I’m working on a Tele project (’72 custom pg on a standard body with a 50’s RI neck). I was planning on using a Pearly Gates in the neck position. Recently I’ve read some post but how much treble they have. I like more mids than highs. My sounds is more Duane Allman than ****ey Betts. I wish I could think of some more examples.

When I play a Strat, I use the bridge and/or mid pup(s). I like a full, rich sound
But I also like pinch harmonics.

The guitar body is Alder with a Maple neck/fretboard. I plan on using a JD in the bridge position. Other than the PG, I have considered using a Seth, 59, or A2 Pro.

Anybody have any suggestions?

I use the PG neck on one of my Strats. It's one of the best neck humbuckers I've ever used. I say go for it...although the A2Pro HB would be agreat choice too...as would the Seth Lover.

It's the bridge model of the PG that some players find "to bright"...although I don't really think it is "to bright" at all.

The PG + is a differant pickup and uses an alnico 5 magnet rather than the alnico 2 magnet in the regular PG...perhaps it's the PG + that has given the PG an undeserved reputation for being to bright.

In all honesty, I have never heard an alnico 2 humbucker that I would call "to bright".

D*icky Betts and Duane Allman had differant playing styles and tastes, and I think that is why they had differant tones....not because each used differant pickups.

If D*cky had played Duane's guitar I'm sure he'd have sounded just like D*cky and not Duane...and vice versa.

Everybody around here knows that the PG is my fav Duncan bucker set...I love them. I would not describe the PGn as bright...PG's do have a spike in the upper mids that help them cut through high gain as well as cut through the mix. I love them.

I don't know anything about the PG but I just wanted to say it sounds like an awesome setup. I really want to get a tele with a JD in the bridge

Hey Lew,
I'm sure you're right. Duane and Dyckey both played Les Pauls, through Marshall amps. I think the main difference in their sounds was in how they set up their amps and of course playing style. In fact, the SG Duane played slide on was originally Dyckey's guitar.

I may just stick with my original choice.
Thanks all,

Nothing but good things to say about PG neck. I think it's got a little more kick than a Seth or AP2. The mids come through in the upper end, which some say makes it a bit "snarly" but I think it really works well for the pup in the neck. That upper-mid snarl could definitely be a bit bright in the bridge for those with already bright guitars...And if you like mids, think about a Custom Custom - whicj\h is an awesome combo with a PG neck.

* Caveta: All of my knowledge here is about Les Pauls-can't say what'll happen in a tele.....
