Neck pup recommendation for a Tele

Ok, this is for one of my best friend's Dad and its totally out of my element, so if anyone has an idea please let me know.

The Tele is an American with a maple board, already has a Seymour Duncan in the bridge, not sure what but I did ask.
The amp is a Fender HotRod Deluxe and his fav band is The Ventures. That about sums it up he is a simple player and doesnt stray too far, save for maybe some southern rock on occasion.
Maybe something between surf rock and southern rock leaning more toward the surf aspect.

I know it would be nice to know what the bridge pup is, but since we dont, perhaps a few different neck pickup ideas would be in order and ill run them past my friend.

Thank you in advance, like I said im lost on this one.

Something with a nickel silver cover rather than brass. Preferably not overwound or hot.

I'd get a new pickguard and a pair of SSL-2's.

This is a good idea, especially if he is a surf fan. The surf sound comes from a Strat more than a Tele, so this would work, but as stated, you need a new pickguard for the pickup to fit.

Re: Neck pup recommendation for a Tele

The Fender twisted Tele is a neck pickup designed to sound more like a Strat neck tone.

Re: Neck pup recommendation for a Tele

Thanks for the suggestions, I was thinking on this yesterday and came up with an STR-1 Vintage Tele pup as my guess, but the SSL-2('s) will have a little more juice, and dare I say more versatile, so its probably a better choice

Ill run this by him and see what he says, thanks for the help!

Re: Neck pup recommendation for a Tele

Well, the Vintage Tele is a good Tele neck pickup, that sounds exactly like a bassy Tele neck pickup should...it is miles away from a clean and clear Strat pickup. Neither is wrong, but it depends what he wants from the neck pickup.
