neck radius

Ok , I've seen the scale length thing and makes perfect sense.
Now how about radius ?
I've several guitars with different radius necks and know my own preferences but am curious if any others have a special preference and why.

Re: neck radius

I started playing on a Les Paul, so I don't like the smaller radius necks (9.5" and below). However the quality of the fretwork makes more of a difference to me. I'd say I like 12", but the 10" radius on my Axis is fine, though the 9.5 radius on my Malmsteen strat seems too round. I think it needs a little fretwork.

Re: neck radius

12" to 14" is where I'm most comfortable.

Less than 10" changes my pick attack, and doesn't sound right.
(I could adjust, but why bother)

Greater than 14" cramps my hand.

Re: neck radius

The flatter the board the more i like it. I actually really love the feel of completely falt classical guitars

Re: neck radius

I prefer vintage fender 7" or so, it's just more comfortable for chording... And I didn't see how it could possible make a difference til I reallized people actually do engage in bends over 2 steps, which just seems excessive for me. I don't do that, so 7" is fine.

Re: neck radius

Coming from a classical background I tend to prefer flatter radi
and longer scale lengths.
Playing since the age of 10, I didn't get into electric tiil my late teens
and it was a real chore, short Gibson scale lengths, tight Fender radi
and narrow necks at the nut.
Since then I've grown to learn how to accomodate to all these variables,
I love my US 57 reissue strat right through to compound radi found
on Warmoth necks which gives a nice flat profile at the picking end.
Be aware that the neck's back profile will also have a significant effect
on how any particular radi feels.
All of this is one more justifiable reason to own more guitars!!!
Love em all!!

Re: neck radius

I prefer 7-1/4"R. on Fender type necks.

Gibsons work real well with a flatter radius, and a shorter scale though.

But for the most part, if the guitar is set up properly, I'll adjust. A proper setup job will do more for you than worrying about dimensions.

Re: neck radius

For chording I like 10, for soloing at least 12 so either a compound 10-14 (or 10-16) or for an all-arounder 12 is good.
