Neck shim material?!

What's everyone using for shimming bolt-on necks?

Tape?

Sandpaper?

Business cards?

Matchbook covers?

Sparkplug gappers/feelers cut to size???

Re: Neck shim material?!

Masking tape on the back of the neck heel where needed. Won't compress or slip in the pocket. It's thin enough to allow you to shim the neck to just where you want it.

Be patient when you do it. You'll have to take the neck off a few times before you get it dialed in just right. Small price to pay tho.

An old credit card cut to about 3/8" x 2" works well...

That's a good one!

I've used tape & matchbook covers in the past but they always compress after a year or so & I need to redo them...plastic shouldn't do that!

Thanks!

i've tried all different stuff. wood, tape, plastic, etc. one thing that works well is the thin carboard that is wrapped around a fresh razor blade.

Re: Neck shim material?!

Before I went through the trouble of making full neck pocket shims out of the same kind of wood, I would use the butt end of a Fender pick. It got me by.

Re: Neck shim material?!

I´ve seen just about everything that would fit in the pocket used as a shim with (usually) good results.

I personally prefer to make a full wood shim...

Re: Neck shim material?!

I use little slivers of dry wall sandpaper. It's kind of like a rough screen so it prevents slipping too.

Re: Neck shim material?!

I've been using some sheets of hobby Brass that can be bought at hobby and craft stores... it comes in many different thickness's

Re: Neck shim material?!

I had to make a largge shim to compesate for a design flaw on a guitar I designed myself from scratch.. the fellow who did the actual labour for me recomended and used a piece of rosewood. It is used in lutherie a lot because it is stable and conducts sound nicely. I am pleased with the results.

Re: Neck shim material?!

On an old crappy guitar of mine thta I'm going to scallop (this is my "try anything you can on it for fun" guitar) I used a folded up index card.

Better retention of the original, non-shimmed tone?

Well, you´re changing the neck angle, so the tone is gonna change anyway, though in theory the transfer of vibrations to the body would be minutely better do to the better coupling effect of the larger surface area.

But my reason is that a full wood shim is IMO inherently more stable than most other methods because of the large contact surfaces. The only thing I hate more than work is having to redo it ;)

I did one of chops' strats with half of a thin guitar pick.

Re: Neck shim material?!

I used a quarter one time. It wasn't the best, but it got me by until I got a wooden one.

Re: Neck shim material?!

Did this every way mentioned with my Kramer. The BEST solution IMO:

Piece of window screen
Angled wood block (same as body wood (i.e; maple)
Piece of window screen

It's a beast to do, but really hold well, and is reversable if you change your mind (no glue!).

But a business card cardboard works in a pinch. If you really want to angle the neck though, I say go wood.
