Need a hand...

Mmmmmmmm......

New member
Hey guys, ive been playing my explorer for around two years now, and I absolutely love it. Its 100% unmodded besides a bone nut which i had installed. The pups in the guitar are great, but i fel like i could get so much more out of them. I just wanna know what you guys would recommend. I know that this is the seymour forum, but after seeing that you guys are actually quite knowledgable and not flaming dick heads i thought that you could give me a hand.

Re: Need a hand...

Hey! Welcome! Explorers Rule!! I have a 2002 black with mirror p/g.

Scuse me if Im thick headed, but what exactly are you asking?? How to get more from the stock pickups? Or how to get more from the guitar with different pups??

With the stock pups, I dont know if there is much else to be done.. The 500t in the bridge is a screamer. I only know of guys removing one of the magnets to tame em..

Now, if you are asking what else for the guitar?? Tell us what you play and what you play thru please..

I was very novice when I got my explorer and so the 500t amplified every mess up I made, so, I couldnt deal with that.. So, I changed pups . I run a 59 b in the neck and a Custom8 in the bridge.. 59b gives me decent warm cleans and the C8 rocks .

Re: Need a hand...

I actually am a flaming dickhead so I can't help, sorry.

I will say that if it's an Epi or similar mid-priced instrument then it would probably be good to swap out all pots and the jack for higher quality units to get a little better sound but that's all I got.

Apart from also saying that the C8 and the '59n are ****ing killer pickups.

I try to be nice sometimes. :)

Re: Need a hand...

I often hear that changing the electronics can work wonders on the sound of your guitar. I would hate to cange the pups all because of the 496. it is so raunchy and fat yet can be turned down to get a chimey single coil tone. My love for it is nearly illegal. but thanks anyways

Re: Need a hand...

Right now it has 300k pots by gibson in it. Im just wondering what type of pots you would recommend to help tame the 500t's ice pick highs and smooth out the overall cleans of the guitar. sorry i should have mentioned all of this before

Re: Need a hand...

250k pots are usually used to tame high end and they can do it really well.

Is your guitar a Gibson or a cheaper model? If it's an Epiphone or equivalent then changing the pots and switch won't do anything except improve the sound of your guitar. Higher quality components can give your sound more clarity and more vibrancy by letting more of the natural character of the pups through. CTS and switchcraft are generally very highly thought of.

If it's an American made Gibson or similar then the electronics are probably of a decent standard already.

It's a simple enough mod to perform, really. Plus, if you don't like it then it's completely reversible. Just hold on to your original pots and put them back in if you like. It's a hard thing to mess up and it can give some surprisingly good results.

What is it exactly that you don't like about the sound? Once you can narrow it down to what you know is wrong then it's easy to fix. Narrowing it down is often the hardest part.

Re: Need a hand...

Ya thanks guys ill mess around with it. I threw a question at you guys without actually knowing what i was asking. Thanks for the help though!

Re: Need a hand...

No sweat, dude. Come on back and ask whatever you want if you need help again.

The important thing to remember is that a guitar rig ca only sound as good as its weakest component. So many guys go out and waste a ton of money on new pickups and **** when all they really need is a different magnet or a different value pot or a good quality guitar lead. You just need to find the weak link that's breaking a great chain.

Good luck.
