Need a lighter Fender combo, usual suspects being considered

Hey guys. I am in the market for a good sounding amp I can move around easily. I love my 68 super but it weighs quite a bit. The three amps I'm thinking about are a Super Sonic 22, a Custom Vibrolux, or a Deluxe Re Issue. I know I like the Deluxe, but I have never played either of the other two amps. The SS22 sure gets a lot of bad press, but it seems like it should be a good little amp. I really don't mind using pedals for OD, any insights or experience you can share is appreciated.

Oh yeah I want to keep it under the $1000 mark. I'm all considering a Sligo Deluxe clone, but since I can't try one I'm a little gunshy on that.

I won't speak to clones because it all depends on who built it, etc

But, know this going in...NONE of the amps you mentioned have the headroom of a Super Reverb.

The Super Sonic 22 is a cool amps (I am basing this on trying the original 60 watt version) but it's a channel switching amp...maybe you want/need that maybe you don't.

The CVR is a cool amp but has VERY low headroom (even less than a good Deluxe Reverb despite being twice the wattage)...I had one a few years ago and dug it overall but the lack of headroom and the extra noise that it made made me get rid of it...that and the fact that it was VERY picky about speakers.

Also know going in that the CVR is not at all a Blackface Fender sound.

you could put neodymium speakers in those combos to save additional weight

I used to own a Super Reverb (reissue, but in terms of size/weight it was the same as yours). I got rid of it for the exact reason you mentioned - portability. Beautiful sounding amp, but useless because it was difficult to move and generally too loud to bother with the trouble of taking it out of the house.

I know you said, "good sounding amp" - thing is that all of the amps you mentioned are good sounding, each in their own way. They're also very different from each other. As far as headroom is concerned, as TGWIF stated, the amps you're looking at will be lower than your Super, however you did not state if headroom at higher volume was a concern for you.

Here's the way I can sum them up:

SS22: Modern, versatile. Like a Swiss Army Knife of an amp. Does a lot of things, and if you read the reviews it seems to do them pretty well. Some guys have encountered technical problems with them, but it's still a newer amp so it remains to be seen if that's the exception more than the rule. I've tried one out and they're nice sounding. If it was a decision between a Hot Rod _____ and the SS22, I'd take the SS any day.

Deluxe Reverb RI: Classic, chimey, moderate headroom. This amp is like the definition of Fender cleans. The Deluxe Reverb is probably one of Fender's most legendary amps. The reissues are well made and seem to be reliable given how few major problems I've seen posted about over the years in relation to how many of these amps that are out there. I've read that with the right speaker, they can sound pretty darn close to their original Blackface counterparts.

Custom Vibrolux Reverb: Modern, low headroom, tight response. I'll start by saying I own one right now. I've written quite a bit about this amp in the past and I could go on at length. This is one amp I absolutely do not recommend anyone buy unless they have heard it in person first. I have read so many posts on message boards like this one where guys who ordered them sight unseen start whining and moaning about how "it's got no headroom", "it's noisy", "the reverb sucks" and other crap. There's reasons for all of those things and the #1 reason is that they were DESIGNED that way. You think Fender doesn't know that with a few minor circuit mods, you basically have a Vibroverb Reissue? This is not a Blackface reissue - this is a modern take on the classic amp. Obviously lots of guys like them because it's been in Fender's lineup unchanged for about 20 years now. Personally, I LOVE this amp! Before I bought it, I did an A/B comparo between it and a Deluxe Reverb. I chose the Vibrolux. I love the tight response of the 2x10 speakers. It sounds FABULOUS when you get it loud enough to break up (which is soon). If you like gritty tone and just a touch of reverb (not washy) then this amp is the one.

Most all of these amps should be carried by any usual Fender dealer. I suggest you go try them out and see what you like!

Deluxe Reverb Reissue, used. It's Fender's best sounding amp currently, IMHO...and of those three, I think it will also be the closest to your '68 Super.

I agree. It's definitely going to be in the same ball park.

Thanks guys. I'm going to try these amps out this weekend, I appreciate the great info.

Zinky and Supro amps are what I would recommend looking into.
I own a Zinky Blue Velvet myself and it's my #1 gig rig.
I have owned just about any Fender amp you can name and I would never go back. Many forget that Bruce Zinky ran the fender Custom Shop for many years.
My Velvet is simply my grail amp and does everything i need an amp to do. It can give me killer Fender type cleans and screaming high gain tones at a foot switch. It does it with little EQ on board (single tone control Mid Boost cut switch gains verb and master) and few bells or whistles which never ceases to amaze me. The amp is small relatively light built like a tank and looks downright cool. I can get jaw dropping tones at super low volume levels and also fill a decent size room unmiced or get over a loud drummer.
New these amps are well out of the price range (25 watt Velvet Combo is $1499) however used they ARE NOT!
Right now there is this 25 Watt Velvet on ebay with a min bid of $799 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Zinky-Blue-...446?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20cdf15026. If you watch the for sale sections of boards like The Gear Page you can find a clean Velvet in the $700-800 range.
I have a boatload of clips of mine and buying this amp was the best thing for my playing I have ever done.
